SOFTBALL BEGINS SEASON WITH FOUR ROAD GAMES

SOFTBALL BEGINS SEASON WITH FOUR ROAD GAMES

LONDON, ON: Under a new regime, the Humber Hawks women's softball program will begin the 2016 OCAA season on the road this weekend with two very difficult matchups.  Interim head coach Duaine Bowles and the Hawks will begin with a doubleheader against the Fanshawe Falcons in London on Saturday, September 10th, before heading to Windsor to play the St. Clair Saints on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Hawks begin with the Falcons, continuing the rivalry between these two major programs.  Last season the Falcons won the season series 3-1; however Humber won the most important game that year.  In the bronze medal game, the Falcons jumped out to a 12-6 lead but the Hawks refused to give up.  After a three-run home run from Hilary Redrup (Carlisle), the Hawks came soaring back to take the lead and ultimately winning the game 19-15 and advancing to the gold medal game.  Fourth-year infielder Kaitlyn Pitek (Whitby) also had four RBI's in the win.

Once the Hawks complete their two games with Fanshawe, they will have little turnaround before their next games as they will immediately head to St. Clair to play the Saints who finished 19-5 last season. Similar to Fanshawe, Humber lost the season series to the Saints but came up clutch when the game mattered most.  In the second round of the playoffs, Humber was able to mercy the Saints in six innings, winning the game 11-1.

As a freshman, pitcher Briana Donaldson (Gorrie) pitched the best game of her career after throwing a complete game against the Saints.  Redrup's stick once again paced the way as she collected another two hits and two RBI.

As the season officially begins, a few major statistical milestones have the potential of being broken this year.  On the offensive side, Bonnie Gillingham (Brampton) and Elisa Gregoris (Mississauga) are within striking distance of Natalie Stoberman's all-time hit record.

Pitcher Myranda Pierson (Toronto) is only two wins away from passing Hall of Famer Jessica O'Quinn for most wins in program history.
