BOWLES NAMED HEAD COACH OF HAWKS WOMEN’S SOFTBALL SQUAD

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks are pleased to announce former Hawk men's baseball player and current assistant coach of the women's softball team Duaine Bowles, as the new interim head coach of the Women's Softball program.

"I am excited to be given this opportunity", said Bowles. "The transition should be very smooth, as I have an outstanding relationship with the players, and inside knowledge of their abilities in all situations."

The Hawks, entering just their sixth year of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play, have had great success in their five years of existence, winning two OCAA gold and silver medals while attending three CCSA national championships. This past season, the Hawks snared the OCAA silver medal.

Bowles will lead a team that returns ten of the fifteen players that donned the navy and gold last season. Included in this group is OCAA All Star pitcher Myranda Pierson, and slick fielding infielder Bonnie Gillingham. The Hawks finished regular season play with a solid 15-7 record, and powered its way there by scoring over an average of seven runs per game.

As a contributing member of the coaching staff over the past three seasons, his primary focus was on developing the skills of the players at the plate. As mentioned above, in just over a single year he has helped lift the offence considerably. The runs per game average has increased over two runs per game, and the team batting average and power number have also risen.

"In Duaine, we have a coach taking over the leadership position on a team he knows well, and one that he has made great strides with", said Humber athletic director Ray Chateau. "I feel confident that he will continue moving the team forward to both provincial and national honours."

Humber, based on their silver medal performance at the OCAA championships last year, have secured a berth in the 2016 CCSA National Championships which are being held in Saskatoon this coming Thanksgiving weekend. This is a very nice addition to the Hawks schedule, which will also include pre-season exhibition play and hopefully another trip to the OCAA Championships.

"Although we have an experienced group of players returning, we have to continue to add pieces to ensure the success of the team," said Bowles. "Participation in the upcoming CCSA Nationals will certainly help and speed up our recruitment process."

The Hawks will open up the 2016 season on Wednesday, September 10, as they travel to London to play the Fanshawe Falcons.
