HAWKS SPLIT SEASON FINALE WITH FANSHAWE

HAWKS SPLIT SEASON FINALE WITH FANSHAWE

VAUGHAN, ON: The OCAA regular season concluded for the Humber Hawks softball (13-11, 4th OCAA) program Sunday afternoon when they split their doubleheader with the Fanshawe Falcons (16-6, 2nd OCAA).

Looking for redemption after losing to Humber at the CCSA Nationals, the Falcons outplayed the Hawks in every area in game one.  Fanshawe scored five runs in the first six innings and pitcher Jacey Lochert was able to keep the Hawks bats quiet up to that point.

In the home-half of the sixth, the Hawks were able to string together better at-bats, scoring three runs and cutting the Falcons lead to two.  Hilary Redrup (Carlisle) got Humber on the board after she hit a double that scored Sarah Franchetto (Guelph) and Kate Kostuch (Mississauga). Bonnie Gillingham (Brampton) then followed up with an RBI single of her own.

In the top of seventh, the Falcons scored five more runs and won the game 10-3.

With their backs against the wall, Humber turned to Rachel Matheson-Green (Oakville) to keep their playoff hopes alive. The freshman put together one of her best performances of the year after allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings of work.

Caught in a pitcher's duel, Gillingham broke the scoreless tie with her first career home run to deep right-centre field.

The Falcons scored an unearned run in the sixth inning and were knocking on the door with the bases loaded and two out.  Myranda Pierson (Toronto) entered the game, inducing a groundball to keep the game tied.

After consecutive hits from Franchetto and Meaghan Murphy (Brampton), the Hawks took the lead on an RBI fielders choice from Elisa Gregoris (Mississauga).  Veteran catcher Terah Camilleri (Streetsville) then cleared the bases with her third homerun of season, tying her career-high.

The Falcons added two more runs in the seventh; however the Hawks were able to hold on and win the game 5-3 and Pierson picked up her eighth win of the year.

The Hawks needed a sweep over the Falcons to lock up the final playoff spot and now must scoreboard watch to see their postseason fate.  Conestoga (12-10, 5th OCAA) still has two games remaining against Durham College (13-7, 3rd OCAA) and if the Condors lose one game, the Hawks will grab the fourth seed.  Durham also has four games remaining and the Hawks can secure a playoff off spot if Durham drops all four.
