LATE GAME HEROICS HELP HAWKS SWEEP CONESTOGA

VAUGHAN, ON: With playoffs on the minds of all Humber players and fans, the Hawks softball (10-8, 4th OCAA) program hosted the Conestoga Condors (10-8, 5th OCAA) Sunday afternoon in their biggest matchup of the season thus far.

After splitting with the Condors on the road earlier in the year, the Hawks knew they would be in tough against a resilient Conestoga team.

The Condors showed the Hawks they came to play early in game one when Brittany Bell hit a three-run homerun in the first inning.  However the Hawks were quick to respond, scoring six runs of their own in the first two innings, driving Condors starting pitcher from the mound.

Trailing 10-4 heading into the last inning, the Condors played like a team with their backs against the wall.  Conestoga sent nine batters to plate in the seventh, scoring four runs; however Humber ace Myranda Pierson (Toronto) was able to shut the door and earn her sixth win of the season.

Pierson, fresh off throwing the first no-hitter in Humber softball history, picked up her 16th career win and after recording two strikeouts in the game, passed Shelby Robblee (2011-13) for most strikeouts in program history.

Slowed by a back injury, Terah Camilleri (Streetsville) has yet to find her groove at the dish this season despite playing outstanding defence.  Knowing the importance of the game, Camilleri put on an offensive clinic for the Hawks.   The third-year catcher finished the game with three hits – including a double and a homerun – and a career-high five RBI's, leading the Hawks to the 10-8 win.

With the loss, the Condors needed game two to keep their edge over the Hawks in the standings and once again took an early lead in the game.  In the second inning, Elisa Gregoris (Mississauga) who came into the game on fire hit a two-run single to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead while extending her team-high RBI total to 15.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Condors struck again when Bell hit her second homerun of the day, giving Conestoga a 5-2 lead.

Not to be outdone by Bell, Camilleri sparked the Humber's offence by hitting her seventh career homerun to lead off the sixth inning.  Hits from Meaghan Murphy (Brampton), Jacklyn Yewchyn (LaSalle) and Bonnie Gillingham (Brampton) helped Humber to tie the game at five.

Briana Donaldson (Gorrie) came on in relief for the Hawks in the biggest moment of the season and did not disappoint.  The second-year kinesiology major pitched two scoreless innings and only allowed one hit, setting the stage for the offence in the bottom of the seventh.

After a hit by pitch to Gregoris and a walk to Camilleri, the Hawks were down to their last out before extra innings, where Humber is 0-3 so far this season.  Humber's last hope came down to Yewchyn, a freshman who hit a walk-off the day before.  Down to her last strike, Yewchyn hit a ball to centre field, scoring Camilleri from second to win the game 6-5.

Donaldson picked up her first win of the season and the Hawks extended their win streak to four straight games.

Humber now takes a break from OCAA play to compete in the CCSA National Championships in Saskatoon, SK.  First game for the Hawks will be against the powerhouse Western Mustangs of the OUA on Friday, October 7 at 11:30am CST.
