HAWKS SWEEP MOHAWK IN HOME OPENER

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks softball (3-5, 5th OCAA) program swept the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-4, 6th OCAA) on a rainy day at Wildwood Park.

After a heart breaking extra inning loss the night before, Humber was determined to right the ship and pick up two big wins at their home opener.

In game one, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead after Terah Camilleri (Streetsville) roped a two-run double to the fence.

By the third inning, Humber had jumped out to a 9-0 lead, with Bonnie Gillingham (Brampton) pacing the way with two hits and three RBI's.

Myranda Pierson (Toronto) was once again on the mound for the Hawks, looking to continue her brilliant outing from the night before against Conestoga (3-5, 4th OCAA).  Pierson was dominant once again, racking up five strikeouts after three innings.  Then, with a perfect game intact, Pierson gave up a single that landed in front of centre fielder Aaliyah Davidson (Brampton), after posting zeros in 3.2 innings pitched.

With Pierson removed from the game for the fifth, Mohawk was able to rally and score five runs with only one out.  After a short rain delay, Hawks head coach Duaine Bowles decided to re-enter his ace with one out and runners on first and third in a 10-5 game.  Pierson took the ball and preceded to strikeout the next two batters.  The Hawks went on to win the game 15-5 in six innings.

Pierson picked up her second win of the season after striking out ten Mohawk hitters and only allowing one hit in 5.2 innings pitched.  The win was also Pierson's 12th of her career, tying her with Hall of Famer Jessica O'Quinn for most all-time in program history.  Freshman Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh) continued her torrid hitting at the dish, finishing the game two hits, two walks and four runs scored.

Despite all of the fallen rain, game two was still able to be played.  After pitching a brilliant game against Conestoga on Friday, freshman pitcher Rachel Matheson-Green (Oakville) was given her first career OCAA start.  The righty began the game in early trouble; however she showed poise on the rubber, stranding the bases loaded and only allowing one run.

The Hawks bats were silent until the third inning when third-year outfielder Elisa Gregoris (Mississauga) hit a two-run single with the bases loaded.  From there, the Hawks cruised to an easy 7-1 win and finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.

Multiple first-year players were impressive in today's sweep, starting with Matheson-Green.  She picked up her first OCAA win after allowing one run over six innings of work.  Catcher Alicia Pellizzoni (Mississauga) made some great defensive plays and also picked up her first career hit.  Maddie Pasma (Georgetown), making the start at third base, collected her first OCAA RBI.

"I'm really proud of the way our freshman played today," said Coach Bowles.  "They really swung the bats well; however I was more impressed with how they played defensively.  The future looks bright for Humber softball."

Up next for the Hawks will be a battle with the defending OCAA champions Durham Lords (4-0, 1st OCAA) on Thursday, September 22.  Game one is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm.
