Omar Miles Named Head Coach of Humber's Men's Basketball Program

ETOBICOKE – Humber athletic director Ray Chateau announced that Omar Miles has been hired as the new head coach for the Hawks men's basketball program. Miles becomes the 13th head coach in program history after spending the past four seasons as an assistant coach with Hawks.

"Omar is an innovative coach who has a tremendous basketball IQ, and he has a proven track record of creating a positive team culture while developing elite student-athletes," Ray Chateau said.

A FIBA certified and NCCP Train to Compete (Level Three) certified coach, Miles has been coaching basketball since 2008. In his role as an assistant coach, he helped the St. Edmund Campion girls team capture the 2014 OFSAA 4A title. In the same year, he led the boys to an OFSAA 4A silver medal. Eventually, his desire to be a part of his son's basketball goals brought him to a team consultant role with Team Breakdown's U12 boys. He assembled a group of coaches and young boys who captured the 2017 OBA division one gold medal. In 2019, he helped the U17 Team Ontario boys basketball team garner the silver medal at the national tournament in New Brunswick.

"I am grateful and proud of the opportunity to lead the Humber men's basketball program, which is steeped in tradition and excellence," said Coach Miles. "This would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my beautiful wife and wonderful kids, who keep me grounded and focused. I would also like to thank Ray Chateau for entrusting me with this responsibility. I am honoured and look forward to rebranding our culture by elevating a program that strives on winning on and off the court."

Coach Miles' Team Ontario resume extends well beyond coaching. From 1998 to 2001, Miles represented Ontario on the hardwood, capturing the national championship in 2001 as team captain, being named the tournament's most valuable player under head coach Chris O'Rourke. He went on to be a five-year starter for Wilfrid Laurier of the OUA and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography with a Minor in French.  As a rookie, the Mississauga native was named to the OUA's men's basketball rookie all-star team.

"As an educator, my primary goal is to mentor and support our student-athletes from the moment they put on a Hawks jersey for the first time, to the day they proudly cross the stage at graduation," added Coach Miles.

As a coach at St. Edmund Campion, numerous players have moved through the ranks to don the blue and gold under Coach Miles' tutelage. Curwin Elvis (2014-19) played five years for the Hawks, finishing his career ninth all-time in Humber scoring, while C.J. Bennett (2015-18) is one of just 16 players to score 300-plus points in a season for Humber basketball.

Since joining the Humber coaching staff in June 2016, the Hawks have captured four OCAA medals and have accumulated an overall record of 76-23 (.768).
