Season Preview: 2019 Humber Men's Basketball

ETOBICOKE – Humber men's basketball will return to the court Oct. 18, beginning the 2019-20 OCAA season on a three-game road trip. The Hawks will open the season against Redeemer, with tip-off set for 8 p.m.

2018-19 Highlights

  • Humber captured the 2019 CCAA bronze medal with a come-from-behind win over Montmorency in British Columbia, 84-76. Jaylan Morgan was named a first-team all-star.
  • Humber's 24 wins were the second-most all-time in program history – trailing only the 1991 National Championship team that finished the year with a 27-2 record.
  • Freshman sensation Kevin Otoo was named to the OCAA All-Rookie team – becoming the fourth Humber player to receive the honour.
  • Humber's 224 3-pointers made were the most in the OCAA and a new program record.

At the Helm
Head coach Samson Downey returns for his second season after a very successful coaching debut for Humber. Last season, Downey became the first head coach to capture a CCAA medal in their first season, and his 17 straight wins to begin a season was a program record. Coach Downey became just the fourth Humber bench boss to be named the West Division Coach of the Year.

Omar Miles (Fourth Season), Chad Bewley (Third Season), and Shane Dennie (Second Season) will return for another season on Humber's coaching staff.

Pushing Forward
The Hawks will look to the leadership of DeQuon Cascart, Jaylan Morgan, Cy Samuels, and Fowzi Mohamoud to carry on the strong winning tradition of Humber basketball.

Humber will begin the 2019 campaign without three of its top-seven scorers from last season. Jaylan Morgan will look to build off of his 2018-19 season, where he became just the 15th player in program history to join Humber's 300-point club.

Fowzi Mohamoud enters the season fifth all-time in career 3-pointers made with 70. The third-year sharpshooter needs 45 triples to break Mike Dvorak's (2007-12) program record of 114.

Last season, captain DeQuon Cascart became the 33rd player in program history to join the 500-point club. Averaging 167 points through three seasons, DQ has a chance to sneak into Humber's top-ten scoring list at the end of the season.

2020 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship
The top basketball program in the country will be crowned on March 21st at the North Campus Gym. As one of the premier events in the CCAA, eight of the top program's in the college circuit will compete for the coveted trophy from March 19-21.

The Hawks last hosted the CCAA National Championship in 2001 and became just the second team to win the title as the host team. During that season, a film crew from the CBC followed the men's basketball program and the documentary detailed Humber's perseverance in a season full of ups-and-downs. The full documentary can be found here.

Fresh Faces
Coach Downey is bringing in seven new players to begin the 2019 season. Khalid Adam, a six-foot-eight forward from Qatar, joins Humber for his final season of eligibility after he represented Qatar's national basketball team at the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge in Tehran, Iran.

Keith Laryea returns home for his third season of OCAA action after scoring 359 points in two seasons with the Lambton Lions. Shevon Noel joins the Hawks after playing the 2017-18 season with the Vanier Cheetahs (RSEQ).
