Troy Black Named Head Coach of Humber Baseball

ETOBICOKE – Humber College Director of Athletics Ray Chateau announced today that Troy Black has been named the head baseball coach for the Hawks. Black takes over for Jeff Gibbs after his season as the interim head coach.

"Troy is highly respected by our student-athletes and was an important member of Humber's coaching staff during its back-to-back OCAA title runs," said Ray Chateau. "His wealth of baseball knowledge, experience under great coaches, and OCAA experience made him the ideal choice to lead the Humber Baseball program into the future."

Black has served as an assistant coach with Humber baseball for the past two seasons where he was primarily responsible for the infielders, base running, and hitting. During that span, the Hawks went 36-9 (.800) in OCAA play, while combining for a team average of .337 and 77 stolen bases in 38 regular-season games.

"It's an absolute privilege to lead the baseball program at Humber," Black said. "The amount of support, resources, and hard work provided by the department are second-to-none and this provides the program with the critical ingredients needed to succeed. I'm committed to building on the winning tradition that coaches Berni, Ferreira, and Gibbs have built."

Prior to Humber, Troy Black was a four-year infielder at the University of Maine (DI – American East Conference), concluding his career with a .344 batting average, while earning two All-American East second-team selections. In 2014, he inked a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles, joining their rookie ball affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.

Last year Humber baseball successfully defended its provincial title, finishing the season with a 16-6 record.

"OCAA baseball continues to grow each year, and with that, the competition continues to get better," added Black. "My expectation is that we go out there and add to this program's success, and we will not shy away from defending our title once again."

Black's coaching staff for the 2020 season will be comprised of Alex Thrower, Justin Marra, and the recent addition of Kyle Hill, as the new pitching coach. Hill played four seasons with the Wayne State Warriors, where he served as the team co-captain in his senior year. That year he became WSU's all-time leader in career starts and received co-Top Pitcher honours. Hill's ties to Etobicoke baseball runs deep, where the former Ranger is now the head coach of the Junior program and will look to continue the pipeline of top Etobicoke players to don the Humber uniform.
