Gibbs Named Humber Baseball Head Coach

ETOBICOKE – Humber College director of athletics Ray Chateau announced today Jeff Gibbs has been named the head baseball coach for the Hawks. Gibbs takes over for head coach Matthew Ferreira, who accepted the vacant athletic director position at Mohawk College earlier this week.

"We are excited to add a high-energy and experienced coach in Jeff to lead our baseball program," Chateau said. "He has an outstanding work ethic and a track record as an excellent recruiter, and we expect to compete for championships under his leadership. Jeff has a wide breadth of experience in both the OCAA and beyond, and we are confident that continues to build on the solid foundation that Coach Ferreira established. We believe the success on the horizon, as well as his high level of engagement, will provide a first-class experience for our baseball student-athletes."

Gibbs has been on Humber's coaching staff since 2016, primarily focusing on the pitching staff. Last season the Hawks dominated the OCAA on the mound, finishing with a program record 1.75 earned run average. In 136 innings of work, the Humber pitching staff allowed a league-low 35 earned runs on 103 hits.

Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 48th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft, Gibbs opted to improve his stock and decided to attend the University of Maine. Gibbs helped the Black Bears capture the 2011 America East Title and recorded Maine's only win at the NCAA Regional. Against 20th-ranked Florida International, he pitched eight innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out eight. Gibbs parlayed his collegiate success into a ninth-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012 MLB Amateur Draft.

"First I want to thank Ray Chateau for the opportunity to lead this championship program at Humber," said Gibbs. "I'd also like to thank Matt Ferreira. He gave me my first coaching job here in 2016 and he helped build this program into what it is today."

Last year Humber baseball put together an all-time season, winning 18-straight games to capture the program's first NCBC and OCAA titles.

"We are in a solid position moving forward," added Gibbs. "We will not shy away from defending our championship, as challenging as that will be."

All nine Humber home games will be live streamed (weather permitting) this season on the Hawks Sports Network, including the 2019 National College Baseball Championship beginning October 24.
