Humber's Loss is Mountaineer's Gain as Ferreira Heads to Mohawk

ETOBICOKE – Matt Ferreira, Manager – Lakeshore Facilities & Community Engagement and long-time coach of the national champion Humber men's baseball team, will be leaving the Hawks nest to become the Director of Athletics at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

While his tenure as manager of Lakeshore Athletics may have been a short three years, he has been a valued member at Humber since 2010, the inaugural season of Humber Hawks baseball.

On the athletics side, he has been the key cog in developing a thriving community engagement portfolio in the Lakeshore Campus community, including the creation of the fun-filled Junior Hawks Summer Camps. With his leadership, the new Athletics Wellness Centre got off to a roaring start and has continued to grow in student and community participation.

His first love, baseball, was what brought him to Humber. He was slotted in as the main assistant to head coach Denny Berni, actively having a hand in all aspects of the program, from recruiting to on-field execution. This past year he took the reins of the head coach role and led the Hawks to the triple-crown – OCAA league champions, OCAA champions and the ultimate, NCBC national champions.

"Matt has been an invaluable member of the Humber Hawks staff on many levels," said Humber Director of Athletics, Ray Chateau. "This is a huge loss for us, but know that it is a terrific opportunity for him as an athletic professional and a role he has been working extremely hard to attain. We wish him the best of luck."

As for Ferreira, he said: "This move is truly filled with mixed emotions. Humber has been so supportive of me, creating an incredible full-time opportunity while fostering my passion for the game of baseball. I know that the valuable things I learned here will be applied in my new role at Mohawk and that alone speaks volumes."

Plans to fill his manager's roles, both at Lakeshore and with the baseball team, are in progress with announcements being made soon.
