ETOBICOKE, Ont -- No. 11 Humber Hawks (15-2, 2nd West) women's team edged out the Niagara Knights (9-8, 6th West) to beat them 67-54 in their second last regular season home game of the season.
Niagara's Bridget Atkinson who ranks third in the league in scoring (18.6) led the way with 23 points. Laura Meadows led the way for the Hawks finishing with 20 points and four rebounds. Jahnae Gyles and Leticia Lopez both finished with 14 points and Makeba Taylor 10 points, respectively.
Makeba Taylor showed why she leads the division in assist, as she opened the game with a great outlet pass to Laura Meadows. In the ensuing possession, Taylor had a crossover that got the crowd engaged early-on. The Hawks jumped out to a 13-6 lead, but the Knights battled back and kept the game in reach. Niagara cut the Hawks lead down 27-25 midway through the second quarter, however, the Hawks responded with a 13-4 run ending the half with a 40-33 lead.
The second half was ruled by the defence as both teams struggled to control the ball and knock down shots. Humber racked with 24 turnovers while Niagara had 25 of its own. The turnovers led both teams to shoot under 40 per cent from the field preventing either one to gain any sort of rhythm.
Despite Atkinson's hot hands, it was not enough to surmount a comeback. Laura Meadows got hot and ultimately helped Humber maintained their lead throughout the game.
