LONDON, Ont -- For the first time in three seasons the Humber women's basketball team lost an OCAA game, falling to the Fanshawe Falcons, 79-51, Friday evening at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre. Jahnae Gyles was the only double-digit scorer for the Hawks, finishing with 19 points, shooting 7-of-25 (28 per cent) from the floor.
In a rematch of the 2018 OCAA championship game, Humber opened the season with what may be one of its toughest matchups this year. The Hawks entered the game shorthanded, missing four players due to injury. This has prevented the Hawks from building any kind of momentum during the preseason and tonight it showed.
Both teams struggled to get any type of rhythm in the first quarter as they both shot under 30 per cent at the end of the first quarter. Neither team managed to take a big lead.
In the second quarter, the Falcons began hitting some shots and looked to try to run away with the game. However, Jahnae Gyles did not go out without a fight as she helped her Hawks stay close to the Falcons ending the half down, 37-28.
In the second half, the Hawks continued struggling from the field, and the Falcons took full advantage of that. The Hawks were outscored 42-23 in the final two frames and finished the game shooting 28 per cent (19-of-67) from the field.
"I think we just need to work on trusting each other on and off the court," said Jahnae Gyles. "Once that gets set into motion, I'm sure will definitely start to see a difference. I'm not worried at all; this was a good loss for us, we saw what we need to improve on and what we need to do. But I'm not upset at all."
Game Notes
- Humber record win streak of 81 consecutive OCAA regular and postseason games came to an end. During the streak, Humber won two national titles and four straight provincial championships.
- Humber's 51 points were its lowest single-game total since beating Holland 50-49 in the 2016 CCAA Championship game.
- Brittania Brown and Hamida Tejan-Cole recorded their first points in a Humber uniform.

Humber continues its three-game road trip at Mohawk on Oct. 26. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
