WELLAND, ON: The Humber Hawks, who have not stepped on the floor for an OCAA game in almost two weeks due to a scheduling change, showed a little rust early but came out roaring in the second half on their way to a 73-28 road win over the Niagara Knights at Welland on Thursday night. The words "roaring in the second half" may even be an understatement in this instance, as Humber outscored the Niagara Knights 45-3 in the last 20 minutes. The first half had ended with the Hawks holding on to a slim three-point lead, and they were outscored 12-10 in the frame.
Skip to the second half. A 30-2 run in the third quarter put the came completely out of reach, allowing the coaching staff to find significant court time for the bench players the rest of the way. They did not disappoint, playing great defence the rest of the way, allowing only a single point via a free-throw, while scoring 15.
Leticia Lopez was stellar, leading both teams with 21 points, including a mark of four for six beyond the arc. Three other Hawks hit for double-digits. Miea Campbell-Johnson and Jahnae Gyles chipped in with 13 points, while Makeba Taylor had 12. No Niagara player was able to break the 10 point mark.
With the win, Humber evens its 2018/19 record at 1-1. Niagara falls to 1-2.
