ETOBICOKE, Ont -- The Humber women's basketball team defeated the Lambton Lions (1-2, 6th West) Saturday afternoon, 72-62, in a hard-fought 2018 home opener. The last time the Hawks faced off against the Lions, it was a historic blowout, the Hawks won 125-29. This time out, Humber was given a much more challenging game.
The first quarter went back and forth as neither team managed to take control of the game. Miea Campbell-Johnson, however, was hot all game and finished with a game-high 18 points and four blocks. She helped the Hawks end the first quarter with a slight lead over the Lions, 14-13.
In the second quarter, the Hawks began to catch fire and play lockdown defence. They outscored the Lions 21-12 in the quarter, while Jahnae Gyles and Leticia Lopez helped boost their team's hot second frame, sending the Hawks into the break with a ten-point lead, 35-25.
In the third quarter, the Lions did all they could to battle back but it wasn't enough. Humber's physical play helped keep a slight lead over the Lions. Its newly acquired guard, Brittania Brown gave the second unit a great boost as she played a great two-way game in the second half.
It was the playmaking from Humber that was the most impressive part of the Hawks offence, displaying the increasing chemistry as the season progresses.
In the fourth quarter, the Hawks had difficulty closing out the game. After a 63-50 lead with 5:00 remaining, the Lions battled back to bring the game within single digits. Coach Ajay Sharma called a timeout to get his team back on track. Despite the multiple efforts by the Lions, the Hawks stayed on top and did not give up their lead. In the end, the Hawks playmaking and defence was too much for the Lions to handle. The team finished with 21 assists and 14 steals proving that their offence and defence are both a treat on any given night.

Humber women's basketball (2-1, 5th West) will host No. 14 Sheridan on Nov. 7 at the North Campus Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
