KITCHENER, ON - Its back to back road wins for the Hawks. Humber turned in another good performance in Kitchener on Wednesday night, downing the Condors 68-45.
Lopez making an early case for All-Canadian honours
Coming off her career high in her last outing, Leticia Lopez continued her scoring rampage against the Condors, finishing with a game-high 27 points. Her hot-shooting could not have come at a better time. As the Hawks continues to deal with numerous injuries, they are in need of someone to step up, and Lopez has answered the call.
The Hawks were without the veteran presence of Jahnae Gyles, after she suffered an undisclosed injury last Saturday. As a result, the former University of Winnipeg Wesmen guard, Brittania Brown, made her first start for the Hawks. Brown's contribution was felt early with her tenacious defense and fast-paced transition game. She finished the game with 13 points and 8 rebounds.
She was nervous but excited to start.
"My teammates were there to support me, so that was good, and we played well so it made it easy," said Brown. When asked how they managed to successfully adjust to the injuries, Brown said, "The first thing is awareness. Knowing who is hurt and what they bring to the team. We know that we all have to step up and take care of our responsibilities. In a sense, it's helped the team come together".
The Hawks growing chemistry has helped them early on in the season. The veterans have done a great job in stepping up. Makeba Taylor, the sophomore guard, got the Hawks rolling early in the game. She led the Hawks to a 9-0 run after back to back threes early. The Hawks ended the first quarter with a 14-6 lead. In the second quarter, they could not find the bottom of the net, ultimately seeing the Condors to outscore them 15-13 in second. The Hawks went into halftime with a slim 27-21 lead.
The Hawks have managed to weather every storm that has come their way in this early season. In the third frame, the Condors managed to cut their deficit to five points. With their fans getting up to their feet, the comeback attempt seemed like a real possibility. Leticia Lopez put the crowd right back to their seats after hitting back to back triples. This put the Hawks lead back up to 11, putting them in a position to put the game away as the fourth quarter was about to begin.
In the fourth quarter, the Hawks made it rain from the field, scoring 24 points. The entire team was knocking down shots and coming up big on defense. The Hawks held the Condors to a poor 29% shooting from the field, and out rebounded them 55-43.
It was a solid performance and a big road win for the Hawks, as they extend their winning streak to 5 games.
The red-hot Hawks will play their third consecutive road game on Wednesday, November 21 against upstart University of Toronto Mississauga Eagles (UTM).
