The Storyline
The reigning national champions return to the hardwood Friday evening, opening the 2018 campaign at Fanshawe in a rematch of last seasons provincial title game. The Hawks begin the season on a three-game road trip before playing their home opener on Nov. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Opening Tip
- This will be the fifth time Humber opens the season against Fanshawe, with the Hawks winning four of those meetings.
- The Hawks return a young core of scorers, including Jahnae Gyles (12.2 PPG), Miea Campbell-Johnson (8.7 (PPG), and Leticia Lopez (8.5 PPG).
- The all-time winningest coach in Humber women's basketball history, Ajay Sharma, returns to the Humber sidelines for the eighth year. Coach Sharma has directed the Hawks to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of two national championships (2016, 2018), four OCAA championships (2015-18) and two perfect seasons. Coach Sharma owns a 142-22 (.865) career record.
Last Season
Humber captured the programs second national championship, running the table, finishing with a 26-0 record. The beat No. 2 Dawson, 68-61, in the championship final and were paced by Ceejay Nofuente and Aleena Domingo, who finished with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
Nofuente became the first league sport student-athlete in CCAA history to be named the player of the year three times and had her jersey retired in her final home game.
Aleena Domingo was named the defensive player of the year, while Makeba Taylor was named to the all-rookie team.
The Next Generation
Sophomores Brittney English and Makeba Taylor return after playing 19-plus games last year. Jaime Gordon returned from injury for the postseason, playing in all three OCAA championship tournament games.
Warm Welcome
Ajay Sharma and his coaching staff added three new faces to the 2018 roster.
Brittania Brown joins the Hawks after playing at the University of Winnipeg, while Hamida Tejan-Cole returns to the OCAA after a stint with the Seneca Sting.
Evelyn Anang, a guard from Toronto, joins the program as a true freshman.
Streaking
Humber enters the season with an 81-game win streak against the OCAA.
On Nov. 29, 2017, the Hawks won their 68th consecutive regular and postseason victory, breaking the mark of 67 established by head coach John MacInnis and the Algonquin Thunder from Nov. 2011 – Jan. 2015.
