The Storyline
The third place finishers Humber Hawks women's softball team will begin their championship run starting Friday afternoon against the Durham Lords (18-6, 2nd OCAA). This is the second year in a row that Humber will face off against Durham in the two/three game.
Season Series
The Hawks went 1-3 against Durham during the regular season with their only win coming from the last time the two teams saw each other.
Last Time Out
The Hawks finished out the year on a seven-game win streak, with the last two wins coming from the home half sweep against the Seneca Sting (1-23, 7th OCAA) by scores of 10-0 and 3-2.
Scouting Durham
- Durham's starting pitching, Ashley Black and Emily Glendinning, finished second and third in the league for ERA.
- Sarah Seifried leads the team with 11 extra base hits on the year. She finished the season with a .426 batting average.
- Durham has won the past three OCAA Championships.
Previous Meeting
This game saw Humber bounce back from a very tough 11-3 loss in game one. The Hawks "tandem" starting with Bree Donaldson, allowed two runs on four hits through 1.2 innings. Humber's ace in Myranda Pierson came in to close the door, going 5.1 innings surrendering only three hits while not allowing a run.
Humber's batting stars came clutch in this game with Elisa Gregoris going 3-3 at the plate and Bonnie Gillingham leading off the top of the 7th with a triple to allow Kate Kostuch to end the game on a suicide squeeze win.
Postseason Woes
The Hawks have lost dropped this last five postseason games, with four of those games coming from the first day of the tournament and not advancing to Saturday. The Hawks will look to break that losing streak on Friday.
Season of Records
- The Hawks finished with a program high 17 wins in the regular season this year beating their previous record of 16 from last year.
- RBI Queen, Elisa Gregoris broke former Humber Hawk Jessica O'Quinn's record of 29 RBI. Gregoris smashed this record finishing with 37.
- 2017 OCAA Player of the Year, Aaliyah Davidson, set a new program record with 32 runs this season.
- The Hawks ace this season, Myranda Pierson, finished with a league-leading 1.54 ERA and also broke the program record for the lowest ERA in a season.
- Shockingly enough, Elisa Gregoris set another program record of her own finishing with 37 hits on the year.
One and Two
Bonnie Gillingham and Elisa Gregoris finished their career one and two on Humber's all-time hit list. Gillingham squeaked through at number one with 141 with Gregoris right behind her at 140.
What's Next?
The Humber Hawks will continue their run in the OCAA Championships this weekend. With a win against Durham, they will face the winner of the St. Clair Saints (20-4, 1st OCAA) and the Fanshawe Falcons (16-8, 4th OCAA) at 5 p.m. on Fri. Oct 19th. With a loss, they will play back-to-back at 3 p.m. against the loser of St. Clair and Fanshawe.
