ETOBICOKE, Ont – The Humber women's softball team (10-6, 3rd OCAA) dropped a pair of games at home Saturday afternoon, falling to St. Clair (15-3, 1st OCAA), 10-1, and 3-1 in the season series finale.
Sarah Franchetto hit her second career home run in game one of the doubleheader, while senior Meaghan Murphy collected four hits on the day for Humber. Pitcher Myranda Pierson had a strong outing in the circle in game two for Humber, allowing just two hits and striking out three in 6.1 innings of work.
Game One: St. Clair 10, Humber 1
St. Clair opened the scoring in game one when Rya Cowan hit a two-run home run in the second inning.
Both teams exchanged scoreless frames over the next two innings until the Saints opened the floodgates in the fifth. Two errors in the inning led to five unearned runs for St. Clair, capped off by an Alexandra Senft three-run home run.
Freshman Megan Muir came on in relief for Humber, striking out the side in the sixth inning.
Sarah Franchetto hit her first home run of the season in the seventh inning, scoring Humber's only run of the game.
2017 OCAA Pitcher of Year Olivia Elliott kept the Humber hitters off balance all game, pitching all seven innings, recording her eighth win of the year. In two seasons, Elliott is 4-0 all-time against Humber.
Game Two: St. Clair 3, Humber 1 – 8 innings
Humber's struggle to hit with runners on base continued into game two, as St. Clair held the Hawks off the board until the sixth inning. Trailing by one run, Meaghan Murphy drove in Alexa Vassos to tie the game.
After seven innings wasn't enough to decide a winner, the game went into extras. Humber's defence once again was its Achilles tendon, allowing two unearned runs to cross the plate in the eighth inning.
With one out in the home-half of the eighth, Franchetto flew out to right field. Aaliyah Davidson tagged up from third trying to cut the Saints' lead to one, but right fielder Tiana Lachance threw her out at the plate.
Myranda Pierson put together one of her best pitching performances of the season, keeping Humber in the game and St. Clair off the base paths for almost seven innings.
What's Next?
Humber returns to the diamond Sept. 30 to conclude its regular season series with the Durham Lords (13-5, 2nd OCAA). Game one is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
