ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's softball team, finally on home turf after a 10 game early season road swing, are solidly in the conversation for the league regular season title after a 10-0 and 6-0 sweep of the Mohawk Mountaineers at Connorvale Park.
With the wins, the Humber record moves to 10-4, just a single game different in the loss column from the St. Clair Saints and the Durham Lords. Humber hosts both these squads this coming weekend.
GAME 1
Humber 10 vs Mohawk 0
This game was decided early, very early, as the home team ran across eight runs in their first at-bat. The Hawks strung together four consecutive hits to start the inning and the merry-go-round continued. The Mountaineers looked to rally, but a 1-2-3 double play with bases loaded and a strikeout snuffed out a bases loaded, no out situation for the Mountaineers. The visitors from Hamilton settled down, but Humber struck for two more in the fourth, and the game was declared a mercy when Mohawk was unable to score in their side of the fifth.
Rachel Matheson-Green snared the win on the mound, while the loss went to Kelsey Hanly.
Five Humber players had two hits on the night, and three players each knocked in two runs.
The Hawk Nation Player of the Game was freshman Alexis Ferreira.
GAME 2
Humber 6 vs Mohawk 0
It was another explosive inning that led to the Humber win in the second game of the night. The Hawks did not run out to as early a lead in the first game, but they did put up five in the third. Although the game was in hand after three innings, it was a big blow by catcher Terah Camilleri that brought the crowd to its feet in the fifth. Camilleri drilled a long home run into the night and over the right field fence. She was joined at home plate by the entire Hawks squad.
Head Coach Duaine Bowles took a page out of the Tampa Bay Rays handbook, as he started reliever Bree Donaldson with the intent of her running through the Mohawk line-up once. As the lead-off batter for the Mountaineers came to the plate for her second time, Coach Bowles took Donaldson out and replaced her with normal starter Myranda Pierson.
Pierson was credited with the win, and although not in a save position, Kadyn Wotton came in to get three outs in the seventh.
Camilleri was the hitting star in this game, leading both teams with 2 hits and 3 RBI's. Mohawk ws only able to get two safeties in this match-up.
WHATS NEXT
Humber will host St. Clair on Saturday afternoon (12 & 2 pm), and then Durham on Sunday (1 & 3 pm), with both games at Connorvale Park.
