LONDON, Ont – The Humber softball team (7-3, 3rd OCAA) split a road doubleheader with the Fanshawe Falcons (6-6, 4th OCAA) Saturday afternoon at Stronach Park.
Game One: Humber 5, Fanshawe 2
Game one saw Humber get down to an early 2-0 deficit. Laura Chappel of Fanshawe had the Hawks hitters on their heels until the top of the seventh when the floodgates opened.
Reigning OCAA Player of the Year, Aaliyah Davidson, started things off with a walk. Followed by fourth-year gem, Meaghan Murphy, who beat out an infield single to bring up the hottest hitter of the Hawks right now, Elisa Gregoris. Gregoris surely did not disappoint as she delivered a two-strike clutch triple over the right fielder's head to score two. Humber tacked on some insurance runs to give them the 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Third-year starter, Rachel Matheson-Green, was close to flawless through 7.2 innings. But, with two outs in the seventh, head coach Duaine Bowles went to fourth-year star, Bree Donaldson, to shut the door and give the Hawks the victory. Matheson-Green got the win to improve to 4-0 on the year. Chappel took the loss to move to 0-5.
Game Two: Fanshawe 4, Humber 2
Game two saw Humber's fourth-year, star, Myranda Pierson take the mound. Pierson was stellar through the first three as Humber held onto a 1-0 league from a sac-fly from Humber's hit queen, Bonnie Gillingham. A leadoff triple in the fourth by Fanshawe allowed them to tie the game at 1. A few more timely hits in the inning allowed the Falcons to take the 4-2 lead over Humber. OCAA Star of the Week, Nichole Erb was on the mound for Fanshawe. She threw a complete game, and in the end, the Hawks could not make an adjustment against her.
Humber's bullpen was once again perfect as Muir, Wotton, and Donaldson all did not allow a run in the final three innings. Pierson was tagged with the loss as her record falls to 2-2 on the year. Erb improves to 4-1 on the season.
What's Next?
Humber will head to St. Clair (12-2, 1st OCAA) Sept. 23 to wrap up its road trip. Game one is set for noon.
