HAWKS CELEBRATE #HereToPlay NIGHT WITH SWEEP OF CONESTOGA

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's softball team provided the stage for Humber's Annual Here To Play celebration on Wednesday night at Connorvale Park.

Awareness and inclusion were on display all night. Both teams and spectators wore event shirts and the opening ceremonies, highlighted by an inspiring message from Humber's Dean of Students Jen McMillan, was simply outstanding. The opening ended with the presentation of the pride and Canada flags, accompanied by the national anthem.

The two games, a sweep by the hometown Hawks, were also exciting and well-played. Humber won game one by a score of 10-6, and completed the night with a come from behind 3-2 win. With the wins, Humber improved their season record to 15-7. Conestoga dropped to 6-14.

GAME  1:

Humber scored first, vaulting out to a 2-0 lead after their first at-bat, but the Condors put up a four-spot the very next inning. The key to the game was something the Hawks had struggled with most of the season, and that is putting runners on base and scoring in multiple innings. The home team conquered this challenge on this night, scoring in five of the six innings played, including three innings with multiple runs.

Another key was how the team answered when scored upon, and this came to light in a large way in the sixth, as Conestoga narrowed the gap to 7-6, only to see the Hawks put up three of their own in the bottom half.

Myranda Pierson pitched 4.1 innings to secure her seventh win of the season. She gave up six hits and only two earned runs. Emily Lush, who went 5.1 innings for the Condors, was tagged with the loss.

The machine, otherwise known as Elisa Gregoris, went on yet another rampage at the plate. The newly crowned OCAA single season RBI king, had four hits and three more RBI's. Hayley Pasma kicked in three hits of her own. Conestoga had four players with two knocks each.

GAME 2:

Conestoga not only ran out to an early lead at 2-0 in the fourth, they were in full control for over half of the game. Conestoga's Laura Rumph was responsible for the Condors second run, a massive home run over the left field fence.

One of the turning points was Hawk starter Rachel Matheson-Green and her "Houdini" like act early, as she wriggled out of a bases loaded/no out situation. A strikeout was followed by two groundouts.

 It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth before the Hawks could push across a run.

The Hawks took over the lead in the fifth, with a lot of help from the visiting Condors. A wild pitch tied the game, and then an error gave Humber the lead.

Humber head coach Duaine Bowles should great confidence in his bullpen, as Meagan Muir and Kadyn Wotton pitched scoreless innings.

Green saw her record move to 7-3 with the win, and Wotton got her third save. Brooke Billings, who was brilliant at times, suffered the loss.

Hayley Pasma completed the terrific night with three more hits, and end the night with six. Conestoga's Sarah Lisecki matched Pasma with three hits of her own in game two. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Humber will finish its regular season at home on Friday night, as the last place Seneca Sting invade Connorvale Park. This is an important game, with final standing and play-off match-ups at stake. The doubleheader will  kick off at 6:00 pm.
