HAWKS OPEN DEFENCE OF THEIR TITLES ON WEDNESDAY AT HOME

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's basketball team, winners of both the CCAA National and OCAA Provincial titles last season, will open defence of their crowns on home court this Wednesday as London's Fanshawe Falcons fly in. This newest edition of the "Battle of the Birds" will tip of at 6:00 pm, from the Humber Athletic Centre.

These two teams battled on three occasions last year, with Humber winning all three games. The first and third resulted in comfortable double digit wins for the Hawks, but the middle game, which was played at Humber was one of the Hawks tightest matches of the season. Humber squeaked out a 60-57 victory, fending off a charging Falcons team that outscored the Hawks 18-9 in the fourth quarter.

Humber took the division title with a perfect 18-0 record, but the Falcons were close behind in third at 14-4. Fanshawe returns nine players from last year's squad, while the Hawks check in 6 returning veterans.

The Falcons top five scorers from last year all return to the hardcourt for the visiting Fanshawe club, led by Laura Vere and her 9.1 points per game scoring average. Humber boasts the CCAA and OCAA Player of the Year Ceejay Nofuente, and CCAA All-Star post player Jillian Semple as starting returnees. Nofuente had a number of quadruple-doubles last year, and did the same in an exhibition game with York University a week ago.

Hawks Nation will be on site to welcome all fans and treat them to new Humber swag along the way. As always, entrance to the games is free.
