ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 85-51 on Thursday night at home and run their record to 6-1 on the season.
Kenny Ejim stepped up big for the Hawks as he had a season high 29 points in the victory, with 15 of those points coming in the 1st quarter on 6-8 shooting (including 3 three pointers). Ejim made the first 4 field goals for Humber to start the game, and his efforts came at a critical time for the Hawks, as Humber's second leading scorer C.J. Bennett (18.1 PPG) suffered from early foul trouble. The Mountaineers had a very balanced offensive approach to begin the game, as the entire starting line-up each made a field goal a combined 6-10 of shooting. After an up and down 1st quarter for both teams, it was the Hawks who were leading 24-15.
The 2nd quarter was evenly contested, with each team scoring 18 points. For the Hawks, Kenny Ejim continued to pour in baskets, finishing with 8 points, and also being responsible for making the only two 3 point shots for Humber. Despite only having an assist in the quarter, Ejim showed a lot of versatility in his game by setting his teammates up with open shots, and by chipping in defensively with 2 blocks. Stefan Grujic contributed 4 points in the quarter, along with Jaspreet Singh, who gave the Hawks a big boost off the bench. As for Mohawk, it was their guards Neil Santos and Jordan Martin who helped facilitate the offense, and help carry the offensive load. Martin also had 3 steals in the quarter. Humber was a perfect 6-6 heading into the half, which helped to give them a 42-33 lead after two quarters.
The second half of the game told a complete different story for the Mountaineers, as they struggled to get anything going in the 3rd quarter, with the Hawks holding them to just 3-17 shooting (17.6%). Defensively, the Mountaineers attempted to adapt by putting more focus towards Kenny Ejim. This allowed Ejim to continue to set his teammates up, which helped Stefan Grujic collect 7 points (including one 3 pointer). It was also a different story for C.J Bennett. Much like his last game against Redeemer, Bennett turned a tough first half into a very good game, scoring 11 points in the quarter, while shooting 5-7 from the floor. Humber outscored Mohawk 22-6 in the quarter, and suddenly the game became out of reach as the Hawks had a 64-39 lead.
Humber cruised along in the 4th quarter, their tenacity on defense forced Mohawk to shoot 25% from the field (6-24 shooting), with no one on the Mountaineers scoring more than 2 points. Kenny Ejim capped off his player of the game performance with 6 points in the final quarter, filling the stat sheet with 29 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. Curwin Elvis also had 6 points in the quarter, finishing up his game with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The final score was 85-51, with the Humber Hawks closing their home-stand with 3 wins and 1 loss.
