ETOBICOKE, Ont -- C.J. Bennett used a triple-double to become the 29th player in program history to record 500 career points, in a 102-66 victory over the Conestoga Condors (3-9, 8th West), Saturday afternoon at the Humber North Campus gym.
The Hawks (9-3, 2rd West) had one of their best defensive quarters of the season to start the game, holding the Condors to just nine points in the frame on 20 percent shooting (3-of-15). Humber dominated the glass on both ends, picking up 17 total rebounds in the quarter to Conestoga's eight. The effort on the defensive end and on the glass led to second-chance opportunities and easy transition buckets as Humber blew this one open early with a 31-9 first quarter lead.
Bennett hit the 500 mark with a three-pointer to open the scoring in the second quarter. He helped pace the Hawks offence in the frame finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Humber's defence slipped in the second as the Condors improved on a rough first quarter to put up 25 points in the quarter. The difference again for the Hawks was on the glass as they outworked Conestoga for boards on both ends. At half Humber had built a 24-point lead thanks to 33 rebounds, 13 coming on the offensive end leading to 26 second-chance points.
The Hawks offence struggled to start the second half as they scored just 14 points on 25 percent shooting (4-of-16) and turned the ball over seven times struggling with the Condors press. Humber was able to maintain their lead with stops on the other end, not letting their turnovers come back to bite them. The Hawks would get outscored by just one in the quarter and entered the final quarter still up by 23.
The offence would come alive again for Humber in the fourth as the team put up 30 points. Stefan Grujic led the way putting up ten points in the quarter. As Conestoga tried to push the pace to get back into the game, Humber was able to force them into bad passes causing ten turnovers in the frame. The Hawks' finished the quarter outscoring the Condors by 13 and taking their first game of 2018, 102-66.
The Hawks Nation Player of the Game was Byron Trench who recorded his third double-double of the season finishing with 13 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, and an assist.
Bennett recorded his second triple-double of the season finishing with a team-high 21 points, 11 rebounds, ten assists, and two steals. Grujic recorded his first double-double of the season and set a new career-high in rebounds and points finishing with 14 points, 17 rebounds, five steals, two blocks, and two assists.
The Hawks' next game will be on Friday, January 19 against the Lambton Lions (6-5, 6th West). Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm at the Humber North Campus gym.
