Humber Athletics: COVID-19 Update – July 29

Humber Athletics: COVID-19 Update – July 29

Today, the Government of Ontario announced that Toronto will enter Stage 3 of reopening as of Friday, July 31 at 12:01am.

In Stage 3, nearly all businesses and public spaces will reopen with public health and workplace safety measures and restrictions in place.

Humber's academic plans for Fall 2020 remain the same. We still plan to provide both interactive online and in-person education in the Fall 2020 term. Sixty per cent of our programs will be offered entirely online, with the remainder having both online and in-person components. All electives will be delivered online.

When we announced those plans, we indicated that we wanted students to feel confident that they could plan for the term ahead, including making decisions regarding living and work arrangements.

In keeping with the recommendations of public health and government authorities, the on-campus services and supports that are available this Fall may change over the coming weeks. Any new information will be shared with the Humber community as decisions are made.

As always, the latest information can be found on humber.ca/updates.

March 17

Humber Athletics continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely, in collaboration with college and government officials and public health experts. With the call from public health officials to increase social distancing, together with the constantly changing circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, means additional measures are being taken by Humber to scale back operations of the college.

Effective Tuesday, March 17, all Humber College campuses are closed until further notice.

Students and employees – except for identified essential services and staff – will not be able to access campus. Athletics and recreation facilities at all campuses will be closed to staff, students and community members until further notice.

Out of the continued prioritization of the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, Humber Athletics has implemented the following measures:

  • All practices and athletically-related team activities have been suspended.
  • All on-and-off campus recruiting and recruiting-related travel has been suspended.
  • All on-and-off campus camps and clinics have been suspended until further notice.

As previously announced by the CCAA last week, the 2020 Men's Basketball National Championship has been cancelled.

"While we know these developments are devastating for our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans, we fully support the decisions of the OCAA and the CCAA and believe these precautions are in everyone's best interest," said Director of Athletics Ray Chateau. "Even in the midst of great disappointment, we must all keep in mind the bigger picture; the health and safety of our community is the most important thing at this time. We are committed to the overall well-being of our student-athletes, and providing them with all the support that they need during this uncertain and unprecedented time."

As Humber College announced today, students will receive an update from their program by the end of the week about alternative academic delivery from March 23 until April 17. Humber Athletics will continue to closely monitor the situation as well as recommendations from government officials and public health experts. Moving forward, we will continue to take guidance from the college, the conference and the CCAA, and any future changes to the above measures will be made in conjunction with those partners.

Travel

The situation is changing rapidly, as countries around the world tighten their travel restrictions. FISU America and its Organizing Committee have decided to temporarily suspend the II FISU American Games in México and will communicate the new date of the event at least 60 days in advance.

Canadians have been advised to avoid any non-essential travel outside of the country and anyone currently outside of the country is urged to try to return to Canada and go into self-isolation for 14 days after their return.

Anyone in the Humber community who returns from international travel must self-isolate as the government has directed.
