Top Humber Varsity Moments of the Decade - 2017

ETOBICOKE – Humber's national win streak continued into 2017, as the Hawks added four more banners to the North Campus Gym that year.

14 provincial titles were added to Humber's OCAA totals, while records were shattered and milestones were surpassed.

6. Nofuente's record-breaking performance
On a cold night in January, superstar Ceejay Nofuente put on a historic performance for the Humber faithful. With a one-point lead after 20 minutes, Nofuente took over on offence, single-handily outscoring Redeemer 36-30 in the second half. At the conclusion of the game, Nofuente broke two OCAA single-game records, finishing with 55 points and 13 made three-pointers.

5. Triple crown for curling
The curling teams made OCAA history in 2017, becoming the first program to win provincial gold in all three disciplines (men's, women's, mixed).

4. Chris Wilkins becomes Humber's all-time winningest coach
For over a quarter-century, women's volleyball head coach Chris Wilkins has helped shape and guide the lives of hundreds of student-athletes, all while winning a few matches along the way.

With a straight-set sweep over St. Clair on Nov. 4, 2017, Coach Wilkins recorded his 319th career victory, surpassing the legendary Mike Katz (1984 – 2004) for the most wins as a head coach in Humber history.

3. Perfect 10
For over a decade, the women's volleyball program put together a run of OCAA dominance that will never be matched. A streak that began in 2008, Humber volleyball ran off ten straight provincial titles, eight of which were straight-set sweeps.

2. Three straight for a Humber legend
In three seasons with Humber badminton, superstar Olivia Lei became the first CCAA student-athlete to be named the national player of the year three times, while winning three consecutive national titles in women's singles.

Lei's final title will live in Humber lore, a tale on par with Jordan's flu game. Low on energy with a violent flu, Lei continued her unbeaten streak at nationals and defeated her opponents 294-108 in seven matches.

1. Three titles for badminton
For almost a decade Humber badminton has dominated on the national stage, winning 23 CCAA medals since 2008. In 2017, the Hawks became the first OCAA program to win three badminton national titles in one academic year.

Adam Dong and Ryan Chow combined for another CCAA title, while duo Chloe Rowe and Phuthita Nilyok won the title in their first season playing together. Olivia Lei capped her career with her third straight national title in women's singles.
