Top Humber Varsity Moments of the Decade - 2014

ETOBICOKE – 2014 was a year of firsts for Humber, as the Hawks continued to make a name for themselves on the national stage. An up-and-coming program saw perfection on the diamond, while a legend saw her brilliant career come to a close.

Dynasties continued to roll as the Hawks captured a decade-high 27 provincials medals.

5. OCAA's first perfect game
Humber workhorse James Byrnes made OCAA history on Oct. 8, becoming the first pitcher in conference history to throw a perfect game. Byrnes threw five perfect innings, striking out six Seneca hitters as the Hawks went on to pick up the victory over the Sting, 16-0.

4. Webster leads the way
Lindsay Webster led the women's cross country team back to the OCAA mountaintop, capturing the individual title by 40 seconds.  The Hawks captured their third team title of the decade, as Coby Phillips snagged the individual bronze, as well.

Webster capped off her brilliant 2014 campaign with an individual bronze at nationals.

3. Men's rugby's dominant 2014 season
Humber rugby's 2014 season was one for the history books, as the Hawks captured their OCAA record fifth straight provincial title. What was almost as impressive as the title run, was the way they dominated opponents during the season. In six games, Humber outscored its opponents 528-0 and rarely even let the opposition cross half. Humber's average win: 88-0.

2. Nyhof's brilliant career
In 2014, women's volleyball captured its seventh straight OCAA title. It was also the fifth straight title for superstar Kelly Nyhof, who concluded her half-decade dominance of the OCAA. Named the CCAA Player of the Year in her senior season, Nyhof became the first Hawk to ever be inducted into the Humber Varsity Hall of Fame and have her number retired while still actively playing.

Currently an assistant coach on the 2019 squad, Nyhof sits first all-time at Humber with 1,186 points.

1. Bright year for men's cross country
After narrowly missing out on the program's first national title the year before, the Hawks went to Calgary looking to prove what they already knew; that they were the best squad in the country.
When the dust settled, the Hawks made program history and were crowned the 2014 CCAA National Champions. Daniel Bright, Eric Bang, Thier Nunguwenimana, and Ali Ghadghoni, all finished in the top thirty-one, while Bright's time of 28:29 was good for sixteenth place.
