Top Humber Varsity Moments of the Decade - 2011

ETOBICOKE – 2011 was another dominating season for Humber Varsity, as the Hawks recorded two more national titles to go along with 14 provincial championships.

5. Landis Doyle sets OCAA career points record
Landis Doyle was named the 2011 OCAA Female Athlete of the Year after rewriting the conference record books in her senior season. The Toronto native retired with 1,120 points while recording 194 career aces – also an OCAA record.

A two-time All-Canadian, Doyle was inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2015.

4. Ajay Sharma named head coach of the women's basketball program
In May of 2011, former athletic director Doug Fox persuaded Ajay Sharma to come back to Humber after a quick stint with the Ryerson Rams … and the rest is history.

Coach Sharma has directed the Hawks to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of four CCAA tournament appearances – including two national banners – and four OCAA provincial titles.  Sharma currently owns a 171-26 (.868) career record through nine-plus seasons at the helm.

3. Nail-biting winner for women's soccer
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and one of the most iconic photos in Humber history helps to confirm this. Cemented in the halls of Legends Alley, this celebrated photo reminds us all of the joys – and relief – of winning a championship.

Looking to secure back-to-back provincial titles for the first time in ten years, Humber and Algonquin battled to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play. With the chance of winning the title on home field slipping away, Natasha Kroon buried the game-winning penalty kick to the left side.

2. Cross country tops in the nation
After experimenting with cross country in the late 70s, Humber Athletics reintroduced the program in 2005, under the guidance of head coaches Monique Haan and Teresa Arnini.

Over the next five years, the Hawks would flirt with a national title; finishing on the podium in 2008 and 2009.

When Vicky Siemon won the program's first CCAA individual medal in 2011, Humber was able to capture that elusive team championship for the first time.

1. Golf continues unprecedented run
In the spring of 2011, the Hawks continued to roll after sweeping the podium at nationals in the Fall. At the Golf Canada University/College Championships held at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club, Humber would post the low team score in each round of the tournament and win by a convincing 18 shots over the University of British Columbia.  With the addition of Alex Dumais, all five Hawks would finish in the top-14 in a field of 103 of the country's best collegiate golfers.

Humber captain Mark Hoffman, would dominate the tournament start to finish and was the only golfer under par for the tournament (73, 74, 71, 69).  Cord and Belsito would join Hoffman as Golf Coaches' Association of Canada All-Canadians.

The Hawks would build on their success from the collegiate season as Mark Hoffman went on to win the 2011 Ontario Amateur and teammate David Lang would become the first Hawk to compete in the U.S. Amateur.  In August, Hoffman, Cord, Belsito, and Coach Chateau represented Canada at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
