ETOBICOKE, Ont-- A hot and sweltering day at Connorvale Park in southern Etobicoke did not sway the recent success of the Humber Hawks men's baseball team (6-2), as they extended their win streak to five straight with a sweep of the George Brown Huskies (2-8).
Game 1: Humber 5 vs George Brown 0
Brendan Lyons, just as he has done all season, was the main attraction in the Hawks win. He threw a complete game, one-hitter and added six strikeouts to boot. His record sits at a perfect 3-0 and his miniscule ERA dropped even further, and now sits below one.
The game was not dominated by hitters on either side, as the Hawks would only be able to get six safeties of their own. The top of the line-up was once again responsible for most of the damage, as Keegan Murphy knocked out a game high two hits, and catcher Justin Marra scored three times and registered his second four-bagger in the last week. Marra also walked three times to complete a perfect day at the plate.
For his efforts, Marra was chosen as the "Hawk Nation" Player of the Game.
Game 2: Humber 7 vs George Brown 2
Steven Hough, fresh off his one-hit win over the champion St. Clair Saints, came out in game two looking to build on that success. Anthony Buonaiuto of the Huskies had a different thought in mind, as he delivered a one-out first-inning home run over the right field fence. With that out of the way, Hough bared down and held the George Brown squad scoreless through the end of the sixth inning, and getting the win to go 2-0 on the season.
The game was tight, right through the first four innings. The hometown Hawks pushed one across in the second on a wild pitch and then combine a Marra double with an Andrew Thomson sacrifice fly in the third to take the lead.
Humber broke it open in the fifth with a five spot, pushing the lead to 7-1. Although Humber had some timely hitting, they were helped by a couple of Huskies errors along the way. Jacob Linhares came in to close out the game in the seventh, but ran into trouble, eventually giving up a run before a simple ground ball to the shortstop ended the game.
Justin Marra and Andrew Thomson both contributed two hits in the nightcap. Thomson, the "Hawk Nation" Player of the Game in the second match-up, also chipped in with a walk, a run scored and a game high three RBI's.
What's Next
Humber will travel down Highway 401 next weekend for games with Fanshawe and St. Clair.
