HAWKS SECURE SPLIT TO OPEN SEASON IN OSHAWA VS DURHAM

Written by: Tyler Milton

OSHAWA, ON: It was a beautiful day for baseball as the Hawks opened up their 2017 OCAA schedule on the road in Oshawa against the Durham Lords. The Hawks split their double header, losing game one 1-0, and rebounding in game two with an 8-2 victory.

The Games

In game one, it was the definition of a "pitcher's duel." The Hawks sent veteran right-hander Dylan Perego to the bump. Perego threw well, as he threw a complete game, 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Unfortunately for Perego and the Hawks, the bats couldn't get anything going against Durham left-hander Alec Brown who held the Hawks bats to only 4 hits over his 7 innings of work. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. The Lords got runners on early which led to a sac-fly by first year player Ryan Bothwell. Hawks lose game one 1-0.

Game two saw the Hawks strike early off Durham left-hander Brodie Harkness. The Hawks scored a run in the top of the first on Max Elofson's RBI single scoring Justin Marra from third. From there another veteran for the Hawks, Brendan Lyons took to the hill and limited the Lords offense to two runs over his 5.1 innings. The offense for the Hawks would pick up a run in the fourth and three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Lefty Jacob Linhares, came in to shut the door out of the 'pen to secure his first save of the year and more importantly the win for the Hawks. Offensive standouts include; Keegan Murphy (2-5, 3 RBI's), Andrew Thomson (2-4 with a double), Brandon Costa (3-4 with an RBI).

International flavour

First year Hawks Max Elofson (Minnesota, USA) and Masaru Ogasawara (Japan) both collected their first hits as a Hawks and both played a crucial role in securing the game two victory. Elofson, went 1-4 in the game and Ogasawara tallied a hit and sacrifice bunt in his four plate appearances.
