FERREIRA MOVES INTO HEAD ROLE WITH HAWKS BASEBALL TEAM

ETOBICOKE, ON: Matthew Ferreira, a key cog in the Humber men's baseball team coaching staff since its inception in 2010, has been selected to move into the role as the head coach. With the change, former head man Denny Berni will shift his efforts and continue with the program he helped build, as a Special Advisor and Instructor to the club.

Ferreira has been instrumental in the development of the Hawks baseball program, serving as assistant coach and recruitment lead throughout. Humber, the 2017 OCAA men's baseball silver medalists, have been on the OCAA podium in four of the five years of conference play. Prior to the start of OCAA baseball, Humber won two Ontario silvers and a national silver in the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA), in just three years of participation.

"This is a very special opportunity for me," said Ferreira. "I have seen the school support the program throughout its existence, and I am looking forward to bringing a championship to Humber."

Although he is a native of Mississauga, he has called Etobicoke home for the majority of his baseball playing and coaching career. Prior to pursuing his education at Western Texas and Southwestern Oklahoma State, he played much of his baseball in the heralded Etobicoke Rangers organization. He continues to give back to the Rangers, as he is now in his ninth year as a coach, and will be initiating a new junior team this coming summer. This past season, he led the Rangers 16U club to the triple-crown, with wins in the OBA, MEL and TBA championships.

"Matt has consistently given his time and efforts to the program, and he has helped make it one of the best in the country," said Humber Director of Athletics Ray Chateau. "He genuinely cares about the student-athlete, and always ensures they find success on the diamond and in the classroom."

The Hawks will return to their home of Connorvale Park in southern Etobicoke next fall to build upon their silver medal performance this year. Prospective ballplayers are encouraged to contact Matt about opportunities to play for Humber and attend spring identification camps, to display their skills for the entire coaching staff.
