ETOBICOKE - Humber women's volleyball (3-0, 1st West) won its home opener in straight sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-20) against Sheridan (0-2, 9th West) Wednesday evening at the North Campus Gym. It was an easy sweep for Humber, led by Hannah Manners' eight kills and Caitlyn Labelle's nine digs.
Match Recap
Looking to stay undefeated and make a statement in their home opener, the Hawks came out strong against the rival Sheridan on Wednesday night.
Humber would slowly gain a lead after dropping the game's first point, making it 10-4 quickly.
Sheridan would make a push, getting a couple of good bounces and getting to within 4 points at 12-8, but critical diving digs from Caitlyn Labelle and a pair of kills from Hannah Manners helped swing the momentum back in Humber's favour.
The difference maker in the first game was simply court vision. Humber knew every ball getting out, and their positional awareness was superior to the Bruins'.
The Hawks continued to pull away from Sheridan; after another kill from Labelle, Humber took a commanding 24-11 lead before finishing the set 25-11.
Sheridan started much better in the second set. They got some bounces and key defensive stops and created a 17-13 lead over the Hawks.
However, Humber would only need an inch, and Sheridan would give it. Four consecutive points to tie the game 17-17 before taking a 21-18 lead. Humber would win the set 25-22 thanks partly to Caitlyn Labelle's game-high nine digs and Amy Connelly's five kills.
Humber started the third set faster. The Hawks got a quick 8-3 lead thanks to three clutch kills from Hannah Manners and never looked back.
Humber would dominate for the vast majority of the set. Sheridan would make a couple of pushes, but Humber would win the set 25-20.
