HAWKS WIN BATTLE OF UNBEATENS WITH 2-1 WIN OVER SHERIDAN

ETOBICOKE, Ontario: The Humber Hawks Womens team hosted the Sheridan Bruins in the second game of the double-header.

It was the first of two meetings between the two rivals in a battle for first place.

Last season the two teams met only once with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Both games are expected to be tight and come down to the final whistle.

The Hawks jumped out to a quick 1-0 with a clinical finish into the bottom corner of the net from Hawks midfielder Jayde Wiklund-Roach. Hawks attacker Stefany Santos with the great assist on the play.

The first half would feature both teams moving the ball up and down the field with Humber providing majority of the scoring chances with no goals to show for it.

Sheridan found a way through the Hawks line just once in the first half but keeper Tania Serafino made a nice diving save to her left and smothered the rebound.

The first half would end with Humber on top 1-0.

The second half featured both teams coming out and creating scoring chances but both teams still failed to find the back of the net.

It wasn't until the 57th minute when Humber widened their lead and capitalized off a free kick from just outside the box. Alora Walcott hit a low hard shot through the wall and after a few deflections it found the back of the net to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

In the 68th minute Sheridan had their best chance of the game off of a corner kick but goalkeeper Tania Serafino made a beautiful diving save through traffic to keep the ball out and their team on top by two.

Humber kept applying pressure and nearly added a third goal but it was Sheridan who finally got on the board in the 83rd minute after a scramble in the box to make it 2-1 to stay in the game.

That would be as close as Sheridan would get as Humber took it by a score of 2-1 to take the opening game between the two and to finish off the sweep for both the mens and womens teams.

The two players of the game for the Hawks were Jayde Wiklund-Roach and Lucy Lorefice who were both a force in the midfield and provided many of the scoring chances.

The Hawks next game is this Sunday vs. the University of Toronto Mississauga who is new to the OCAA this season. The Hawks are now 2-0-1 on the season and currently sit in first place in their division.
