WINDSOR, Ont-- In the midst of their longest road trip of the season, the Humber softball team (10-6, 3rd OCAA) travelled south, to play two against St. Clair College (14-4, 1st OCAA) on Sunday afternoon. Coming off a sweep of Fanshawe the night before, the Hawks looked to continue their winning trend but unfortunately Humber dropped both contests 5-0 and 3-2.
ST. CLAIR 5, HUMBER 0
To continue the winning trend to the weekend, Humber looked to right-hander Rachel Matheson-Green to lead them in this one. Matheson-Green pitched well in this outing, but a couple of mistakes ended up costing her in this outing. Through the first three innings, Matheson-Green was dealing, setting the Saints down in order each evening. But the fourth and the fifth innings were where the Saints did their damage capitalizing on a couple of walks and errors by the Hawks. In the end, Matheson-Green ended up going six innings, five runs on five hits, two walks and a punch out.
Offensively, the Hawks left their bats in London as they only tallied three hits in this one as the St. Clair starter dominated Humber. Through her seven innings of work, she struck out 11 Hawks and walked three.
ST. CLAIR 3, HUMBER 2
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Hawks and Saints go blow for blow in this heavyweight tilt. Humber sent ace Myranda Pierson to toe the rubber and earn the Hawks a season series split with St. Clair. Pierson put together another good outing as she limited the St. Clair's bats to five hits over her six innings of work. Unfortunately, the great outing would go to waste but Pierson continues her pursuit for 100 career strikeouts as she added two more to her total.
While the offence ended their scoreless drought after eight innings, the two runs were not enough to win in this one. The Hawks tallied six hits in the effort but only had three runners left on base. In total, the Hawks had nine baserunners and only cashed two of them.
HAWKS NOTES
- Humber falls to 10-6 on the season with crucial games coming up next week against Durham and Mohawk.
- Losing both against St. Clair now gives them the tiebreaker if necessary.
- The two runs the Hawks scored on the day are the least they've scored in a doubleheader this season
- St. Clair has blanked the Hawks twice this season, the only two times Humber has been shutout this year.
WHAT'S NEXT?
After a week off, the Hawks return to action on October 10th against the Seneca Sting (3-13, 7th OCAA), at Seneca College – Newnham. The doubleheader is the start of an eight games in six days stretch for the Hawks. First pitches are slated for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. as Humber looks to get back in the win column.
