OSHAWA, Ont -- A midweek match-up saw the Humber softball (7-3, 3rd OCAA) team travel east to play in Oshawa against the reigning OCAA gold medalist, Durham College (7-3, 2nd OCAA). The games would be a heavyweight showdown as Humber went pound for pound with the reigning champions. Humber would lose game one 5-1 but bounced back to win a thriller 15-14 in 11 innings.
DURHAM 5, HUMBER 1
With the Hawks looking to get things going on the right foot, they turned to second-year right-hander Rachel Matheson-Green. Matheson-Green was her usual self as she kept the Durham hitters off balance throughout the first few frames. She battled all throughout her outing allowing six hits over her 5 1/3 innings pitched, allowing four runs (three earned). Bree Donaldson came in to relieve Matheson-Green in the sixth allowing a run on two hits in her 2/3 of an inning.
Offensively, the bats were quiet throughout as the only hits came off doubles from Elisa Gregoris and Samantha MacCallum in the second inning. The Hawks only mustered to get four runners on in seven innings.
HUMBER 15, DURHAM 14
Not much more can be said about this game except for it was a marathon. Humber turned to ace Myranda Pierson to the rubber, to right the ship and get the Hawks a split of their doubleheader. Pierson battled the tough Durham lineup as she got out of a few jams early to preserve the 5-2 lead over the first four innings. In the fifth Jheri Jamieson came in to hold the tie at five through five innings. In the sixth inning, former Durham Lord Samantha MacCallum came in to hold the game close. MacCallum held the Lords to two hits over her 2 2/3 innings of work. Bree Donaldson entered the game in the ninth inning in a jam and got out of it with the game still tied. Donaldson ended up picking up the win for her 1 2/3 innings of work at the end of the 11 inning marathon.
The bats were active and hot throughout the 11 inning contest. Hawks table setter, Jenna Hillman led the charge going 3-6 with four RBIs and an inside the park home run in the eighth inning. Other notables, Hilary Redrup, had a triple and two RBIs, Elisa Gregoris had a triple and three RBIs, Bonnie Gillingham had three singles and two RBIs. Aaliyah Davidson, Terah Camilleri, Kyra Gay all picked up RBIs in the winning effort.
WHAT'S NEXT?
On Sunday the Hawks travel to Hamilton for their first matchup of the 2017 campaign against Mohawk College. The Mountaineers come into 2-6 and play Fanshawe College on Friday on the road in London. First pitches slated for Sunday are at noon and 2 p.m. and will be played at Mohawk Sports Park.
2017 OCAA Women's Softball Championships
Humber is the proud host of the 2017 championship tournament. The event will take place on Friday & Saturday, October 20 & 21/17 (with Sunday as a rain day), and will be held at the Brampton Fairgrounds Field. All games will be streamed live on HSN1.
