HAMILTON, Ont – It was a record-breaking day for the Humber softball team (8-4, 2nd OCAA) as they were back in action Sunday playing against Mohawk College (4-8, 5th OCAA) for the first time this season. Coming into the doubleheader, the Hawks were looking to get out of their streak of splitting series with teams, but unfortunately, the streak would continue as Humber would drop game one 6-2 before bouncing back in game two, winning 10-0.
MOHAWK 6, HUMBER 2
Trying to get the Hawks started on the right foot, head coach Duaine Bowles turned to right-hander Rachel Matheson-Green for her sixth start of the year. The usually dominant Matheson-Green was hit hard by the Mountaineers in the first inning as they plated five runs right off the get go. Unfazed by the adversity, Matheson-Green would continue on in the game working five innings, allowing just those five runs on five hits, a walk and a strikeout. In the sixth, Jheri Jamieson took to the rubber and the middle of the Mountaineers order got to her as they plated a run on three hits in her only inning of the day.
Offensively, the bats were silent as Mountaineers starter Aimee Leduc held the Hawks to six hits through her seven inning, complete game effort. Humber did not make the Mohawk starter work, as the Hawks had very few deep counts throughout the contest and she did not issue a walk.
HUMBER 10, MOHAWK 0
In this one, it was a tale of two completely different teams. Game one version of the Hawks was gone and a competitive, eager bunch of Hawks looked to earn the series split. This mentality started with the one toeing the rubber, Myranda Pierson. Pierson had a game for the record books. From her first pitch she attacked the Mountaineer hitters and was dominant in doing so. Pierson was virtually lights out, inducing weak contact and keeping the Mohawk hitter's off-balance to no-hit the Mountaineers. This was Pierson's second career no-hitter - her first coming against Seneca last year.
Pierson ended with five innings pitched, no runs on no hits, two walks (one hit-by-pitch) and two strikeouts as she inches her way closer to 100 career strikeouts.
The bats bounced back strong in this contest. Mohawk started the same pitcher in game two as they did in game one and she wasn't nearly as dominant, allowing two runs in her two-plus innings of work.
From that point on, Humber scored five in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Table-setter Meaghan Murphy was exceptional, going 1-1 with three walks and two RBIs. Other standouts included: Elisa Gregoris (1-2, three runs scored and an RBI), Emily Erskine (2-2, three runs scored) Sarah Franchetto (2-3, four RBIs) and Bonnie Gillingham (2-3, four RBIs). This was a record breaking game for Gillingham as she collected her 100th career OCAA hit, the first Humber Hawk to reach this milestone.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Hawks travel East to play Fanshawe College (4-8, 5th OCAA) on Saturday, in doubleheader action. The games will be held at Dan Pulham Field in London, with first pitches slated to be under the lights at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, respectively.
2017 OCAA Women's Softball Championships
Humber is the proud host of the 2017 championship tournament. The event will take place on Friday & Saturday, October 20 & 21/17 (with Sunday as a rain day), and will be held at the Brampton Fairgrounds Field. All games will be streamed live on HSN1.
