BRAMPTON, ON: The Humber Hawks women's softball team (6-2) defeated the St. Clair Saints (8-2) by a score of 5-3 in game two of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Brampton Fairgrounds. Game one saw the Saints shutout the Hawks down 6-0. With the win in the finale, Humber split the weekend, finishing win two wins and two losses.
Game 1:
ST. CLAIR 6 vs HUMBER 0
Saints hurler Olivia Elliot kept the Hawks batters guessing all day, and only had to work out of a jam once in the seven innings she pitched on her way to a complete game win. In what was a tight scoreless game into the fourth inning, a Hawks error led to three unearned runs, The Saints went on to tack on one in the sixth and another two in the seventh to put the game away. When the dust settled, St. Clair rapped out 12 hits, not striking out once. Humber was able to hit six safeties, but struck out nine times.
Three Saints recorded two hits in the game, but it was Jenna Pierce who was the hitting hero, with four RBI's. Bonnie Gillingham was the only Hawk to get two knocks on the day.
Rachel Matheson-Green was tagged with the loss, her first of the season. Unfortunately for her, three of the four runs against her were unearned.
Game 2:
HUMBER 5 vs ST. CLAIR 3
The Hawks ability to score runners from third with less than two outs was one of the key factors in the Humber game two win. The other, of course, was the effort on the mound by Hawk hurler Miranda Pierson.
After St. Clair scored in their half of the first, Humber came out on fire in the same frame, seeing the first three batters crossing the plate to give Humber an early 3-1 lead. As mentioned above, a SAC fly by Terah Camilleri with one out ensured it was a three spot for the Hawks. The Saints chipped away in the third, and closed the gap to 3-2. It was the fifth that was also significant, as Meaghan Murphy led off with a single and scored on a triple by Aaliyah Davidson. With Davidson on third, Bonnie Gillingham elevated a fly ball to left for the sacrifice fly, scoring the Hawks fifth run.
Although on a roll, Pierson seemed to run out of gas in the sixth, walking the first two batters. Reliever Samantha MacCallum came into the game, and was greeted by a Hawks error to load the bases with no one out. She bared done and got out of the inning by only surrendering a single run. MacCallum was lights out in the seventh, striking out three of the four batters she faced to secure the save.
Murphy and Davidson led the Hawks with two hits each, and Davidson also chipped in with three RBI's. The Saints, with only four hits in the contest, did not have anyone with two hits.
Pierson was credited with the win, while St. Clair's Sara Stiller was tagged with the loss.
WHAT'S NEXT
Humber will travel to Oshawa on Thursday for doubleheader action against the defending champion Durham Lords (4-2). The first pitch, from the Lords on-campus diamond is set for 6:00 pm.
