BRAMPTON, Ont -- The Humber women's softball team (5-1, 2nd OCAA) entered their doubleheader with Fanshawe (2-4, 4th OCAA) unbeaten on the young season and looked to continue their strong start to 2017 OCAA season. Unfortunately, the Hawks win streak would be snapped in game one losing 9-5; however, they bounced back with a strong team performance in game two winning 10-0.
HUMBER 5, FANSHAWE 9
In game one, the Hawks sent ace Myranda Pierson to the rubber in hopes of continuing the winning trend to the start of the season. In this outing, the defence for Humber let Pierson and the team down with six errors (season high) as a team. The sloppy defensive showing by the Hawks allowed the Falcons to take an early lead, as Fanshawe scored seven runs in the first four innings. This would see head coach Duaine Bowles removing Pierson from the ballgame in favour of third-year right-hander Bree Donaldson. Donaldson and first-year left-hander Jheri Jamieson finished out the game for the Hawks.
Offensively, doubles by Meaghan Murphy, Aaliyah Davidson, Elisa Gregoris and Sam MacCallum led the team. Gregoris added a triple as well as she accounted for two of Humber's five extra-base hits. The Hawks were held relatively quiet otherwise as Fanshawe right-hander Shianne Martin held Humber to two runs over her five innings of work.
HUMBER 10, FANSHAWE 0
Game two saw a bounce-back performance by the Hawks. Head coach Duaine Bowles leaned on second-year right-hander Rachel Matheson-Green to right the ship for Humber. Matheson-Green did not disappoint as she once again attacked the Fanshawe offence all outing, putting together another stellar performance. On the afternoon, Matheson-Green finished with five innings pitched, four hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. With the win, Matheson-Green improves to 3-0 on the year and has been a bright spot for the Hawks so far.
Offensively, Humber showed their muscle with doubles from Aaliyah Davidson, Elisa Gregoris (2), and Bonnie Gillingham. The offence was relentless, scoring runs in each of the five innings that they played in. Elisa Gregoris (4), Aaliyah Davidson (2), Jenna Hillman, Meaghan Murphy and Bonnie Gillingham all collected RBIs in the effort. Elisa Gregoris had a great day at the plate, going 4-6 with three doubles and a triple, driving in five runs on the day.
What's next?
The Hawks are at home to St. Clair on Sunday. St. Clair (7-1, 1st OCAA) visits the Hawks in doubleheader action. The games will be held at Brampton Fairgrounds with first pitches slated for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
