ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball opened the 2017 season at home on Thursday night in front of large crowd at the Humber Athletic Centre. The result was a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-14) straight set win over Ancaster's Redeemer Royals.
From the opening serve it was clear to see that the game was an early season affair, complete with some new faces in both line-ups. At points, the home team looked dominant, and at others, it looked like they were trying to find chemistry on the court. The 25-15 set score was based more on who would make fewer errors, than who controlled the play. But, give the home team credit, as they took a tight game at the ten point mark and pulled further and further away with every service.
The second set, at least based on the score indicated a tighter set, but it was one where the Hawks secured a solid lead and had the Royals strike late to make it close. By this time in the match, two Humber players came to the forefront and were making statements that would reverberate through the last set. One of the newest Humber Hawks, middle Jasmine Lougheed, recorded a number of kills that went straight down, and a couple that left Redeemer players unable to defend themselves. Veteran Brynee Spence-Coleman also flexed her muscles and saw her point total rise considerably.
The third and final set was over very quickly, as the Hawks ran out to a quick 8-0 lead before cruising the rest of the way. Hawks head coach made a couple of changes in the third, with one being the insertion of rookie Alex Bartman into the setter's role.
Spence-Coleman was the only Hawk to hit double figures on the night, with team highs in kills (7) and service aces (4). In just two sets played, Devan O'Connor returned quickly to 2016-17 form and had six kills and two service aces.
Kyla Wilkins was selected as the Hawk Nation Player of the Game.
HISTORY WATCH
Hawks head coach Chris Wilkins tied Mike Katz for the all-time wins record by a Humber coach with his 318th win. He will look to take over the number one spot next weekend, as the Hawks hit the road for games in London and Windsor.
