by Nick Suddes

ETOBICOKE, Ont -- No. 4 Humber women's volleyball (9-0, 1st West) capped off the first half of the 2017-18 season in style, defeating the visiting Boreal Vipers (0-9, 10th West) in straight sets (25-11, 25-11, 25-17) Sunday afternoon, at the North Campus Gym.

The Hawks got off to a slow start in this one as they struggled with errors in the opening set combining for seven in the frame. They led 13-9 halfway through the set but took control in the back half closing it out on a 9-0 run taking the set handily, 25-11.

Both teams would go back and forth to open the second with Humber leading just 9-8 part way through the set. The Hawks blew things open from there outscoring the Vipers 16-3 to take the set 25-11. Danielle Miles sparked the rally for the Hawks as she led the way in the frame with her five points (four kills, one serving ace).

The Hawks opened up the third set on fire taking a quick 9-1 lead over the Vipers. Boreal wouldn't go away that easily though as they rallied back to cut the Humber lead down to just three halfway through the set. Watson would take control of the set from there, scoring eight points (four kills, four serving aces) to put the game out of reach as Humber took the final set 25-17 to cap off the sweep.

The Hawks Nation Player of the Game Julia Watson led the way with her 16 points (nine kills, four serving aces, and three blocks) a new career high for the second year right side. First-year Middle, Danielle Miles also set a new career high with her ten points (six kills, four aces). The Hawks also set a new season high for serving aces as a team with 16 in the game.

With the win, Humber moves to 9-0 on the season and sit alone atop the west division standings. With the loss, Boreal moves to 0-17 all-time against the Humber Hawks and now sit at 0-9 on the season.

The Hawks will open up the second half at home on Sunday, January 14th against the St.Clair Saints (6-3, 4th West) with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m at the Humber North Campus Gym. Catch the game live or on HSN 1.
