HAWKS GIVE COACH WILKINS HISTORIC WIN WITH 3-0 VICTORY

WINDSOR, ON: Chris Wilkins, head coach of the Humber Hawks women's volleyball team, set the Humber all-time coaching wins record with his 319th win on Saturday night. The Hawks knocked off the St. Clair Saints 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22) in a match played on the Saints home court in Windsor.

Wilkins leap-frogged the legendary men's basketball coach Mike Katz with the win. Brother Wayne is just three wins behind Chris, and it looks like he may join Chris in passing Katz this season. Katz's record speaks for itself. Along with the wins is five CCAA National titles, and inductions into the OCAA and CCAA Hall of Fame.

The game itself is always a challenge. Not only are the Saints a top-notch club, the Hawks had to travel four hours on a bus and then shed the bus legs in time to play an early important regular season game.

The first set was tight, but it was the visiting Humber squad that led from front to back, and secured leads at the 5, 10, 15 and 20 point marks.

The Saints ran out to an early 6-1 lead in the second set, and seemed primed to tie the match at one. With the aid of a few St. Clair service errors, and some fine Humber play, the Hawks ran off 24 of the next 34 points to win the set in dominating fashion.

The third and final set was a battle all the way. St. Clair once again scooted out to a lead, only to see Humber respond, but the Saints would not go away and led after the 15 point mark. In fact, the match was tied at 20. Setter Celine Blanchette went on a serving run of her own, scoring four straight points to put the set and match out of reach.

Humber's record runs to 2-0, while the Saints dropped their first of the year and fall to 2-1.

The Hawks will travel to London on Sunday for a 1:00 pm match-up with the Fanshawe Falcons.
