THE STORYLINE
The No. 2 Humber women's volleyball team earned the first-seed in the OCAA Championships after finishing with a perfect 18-0 regular season record for the sixth consecutive year and will be making its 24th straight postseason appearance. In its quarter-final matchup, the Hawks rolled over Loyalist 3-1 and will now face the hosts St. Clair Saints (13-6) in the semi-finals.
LAST TIME OUT vs ST. CLAIR
This will be the first meeting between these division foes in the postseason since 1995. Earlier in January, the Saints became one of five teams to win a set off the Hawks; however Humber won the match 3-1. OCAA Rookie of the Year Breanna Golding paced the way for the Hawks in the win, finishing with 13 kills on 27 swings (.407). Angela Evans had a team-high 10 kills on 30 swings (.200) for the Saints in the loss.
SCOUTING ST. CLAIR
The Saints advanced to the semi-finals after a five set win over the Algonquin Thunder (15-4) in front of their rowdy home fans. Angela Evans finished with a game-high 19 kills, while Kaila Crough had eight kills and four crucial service aces.
During the season, Crough led the Saints offensively, finishing 11th in the league averaging 3.5 points per set.
ALL-ONTARIO
Alexandra Newman, Devan O'Connor and Breanna Golding were named OCAA First Team All-Stars after their prolific seasons led Humber to its sixth consecutive 18-0 regular season. Humber was the only program to land three student-athletes on the first team.
ROOKIE CLASS
Humber's freshman phenom Breanna Golding was named the 2016-17 OCAA Rookie of the Year after finishing third in the OCAA west division in scoring, averaging 3.8 points per set.
A YEAR AGO
Humber finshed 2016 with a 24-1 record, including 18-0 in OCAA play. The Hawks earned a berth to the CCAA national championship tournament for the ninth consecutive year, but fell to No. 1 VIU, 3-0 in the semifinals. Humber went on to defeat Holland College and Briercrest to earn the programs first national medal, a CCAA bronze.
