WELLAND, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team lost their first set on the year, but remained perfect with a 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 26-24, 25-20) win over the host Niagara Knights. The Hawks record improves to 5-0, while the Knights fall to 5-1.
The first set was total domination by the visiting Hawks squad, running out to a big lead and never looking back on their way to a 25-13 win. The key to the set was the Hawks ability to serve tough up and down the line-up, with veteran Brynne Spence-Coleman coming up with a significant run.
The Knights answered back in the second set, giving the Humber team their first set loss of the year by a score of 26-24. Full credit to the Knights in this set as they battled back on a number of occasions, before closing out with a win. But, it was clear to see that the Hawks were prone to errors, most coming by missed free ball play.
The third set mirrored the second in many ways, with the exception of the Hawks coming up with a 26-24 win to lead the match 2-1. Humber looked to be in control, as they led in the early 20's. After a Knight's run, it was the Hawks to play come-from-behind late. Down 24-23, they held off they Knights on set point and rolled off three straight points for the win.
The fourth set opened with Humber taking an early lead and then having freshman Breanna Golding go on a run from the service line. Humber led at the 5, 10 and 15 marks, but Niagara would not die, and came back from an eight point deficit to trail by only 3, at 17-14. The Hawks responded and moved into a five point lead at the 20 point mark. The final score of the fourth and final set was 25-20.
Humber will now travel to London on Saturday to play the Fanshawe Falcons, with the first serve set for 1:00 pm.
