WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL WINS TITLE ON HOME COURT

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL WINS TITLE ON HOME COURT

When your program has 14 provincial titles in 20 years, it is difficult to decide which championship is more memorable than the rest.  However, in 2006, the Humber Hawks had the rare opportunity to capture a provincial title on home court against their conference rival.

The Humber Hawks had a “perfect” season on their minds and indeed accomplished that with “Perfection” leading the way. The No. 1 Humber College women’s team defeated the extremely tough and second seeded Nipissing Lakers from North Bay. Humber’s Perfection Powell was as close to perfection as a player can be as she was selected as the tournament most valuable player.

The Hawks picked up their opening match over the Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa) 3-0 with set scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15. Amanda Arlette from Humber was named Player of the Game. In the semi-final match, the Hawks picked up a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-13) victory over the Fanshawe Falcons (London) led by Perfection Powell’s 12-points (12 kills).

In the Championship final the Hawks came out quickly and won the first two sets, but the Lakers responded by dumping the Hawks in the third. The fourth was fiercely fought, but the Hawks prevailed by taking control when both teams hit the twenty point mark. Set scores were 25-15, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-21.

Nipissing was once again led by All-Canadian Megan Stacey as she accumulated 17 offensive points by way of 14 kills, two stuff blocks and one service ace. Also making an incredible impact in this match was the Lakers “Player of the Game” Stephanie Hancock.

Humber’s Perfection Powell put on a dominating effort offensively as she powered her way to 20 kills. She also added one stuff block and two service aces for a game high 23 points. Robyn Stafford was almost unstoppable in the first two sets and carried that through to a few key kills in the last set as she parlayed her 18 offensive points, including 15 kills, to “Player of the Game” honours.
