ETOBICOKE, Ont -- Humber College won the first-ever Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women’s rugby championship on Saturday, defeating silver medalist Seneca College 15-7 at Humber’s Valley Field.

Lesley Swan (Mississauga, Ont.) scored a pair of tries for Humber to lift the Hawks to victory.

It was Seneca that got on the scoreboard first, however, as Lorette Kamamba (St. Catharines, Ont.) split two defenders, shed a tackle and scored three minutes into the contest. Karen Liu added a convert to put Seneca up 7-0.

Swan responded with a try of her own, steamrolling a defender en route to the end zone to cut the Humber deficit to 7-5.

Near the end of the half, Seneca was threatening to add to its lead when a Sting player got loose up the middle. Humber’s Cynthia Ho (Mississauga, Ont.) made a great tackle, picked up the loose ball, and ran the opposite way. Ho passed to Swan who deked out two defenders and dashed 30 yards to the end zone, giving Humber a 10-7 lead.

The Hawks sealed the win late in the match as Jessica Fleishman (Maple, Ont.) bulled through Seneca defenders for a try.

Swan and Natalie Tam (Toronto) of Seneca were named “Man of the Match” for their respective teams. The match was hard hitting as both clubs gave it their all.

Humber (5-0, 2-0 playoffs) completed an undefeated season, winning seven straight games against OCAA competition, including two victories against Seneca (3-2, 1-1 playoffs). The Hawks outscored their opponents 128-38.

Women’s rugby was added to OCAA for the 2010 season and is going through a two-year trial period before it was accepted as a fully-sanctioned sport in 2012.
