MEN'S RUGBY'S DOMINANT 2014 SEASON

The 2014 men's rugby team may have been the most dominant squad in OCAA history.  After sweeping the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record, the blue and gold outscored its opponents 528-0, becoming the first conference to ever accomplish the feat.

Humber went on to complete the perfect season and win its fifth consecutive conference championship.

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- The Humber Hawks tied an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) record on Saturday, winning their fifth consecutive men's rugby title with a 29-18 win over the Trent Excalibur in the gold medal match.

Humber second-year outside centre Johnny Sheridan (Bolton, Ont.) led all players with 14 points, scoring two tries while adding two converts. Second-year players Steve Fievet (Alliston, Ont.) and Scott Gauer (Mississauga, Ont.) scored one try each for Humber.

After winning seven straight games via shutout, it took until the gold medal match for the Hawks to allow their first points to the opposition. Humber was behind on the scoreboard for the first time all season, trailing 6-5 at one point. But the Hawks persevered, taking the lead for good shortly after that.

Trent second-year back Jesse Leadbetter (Midland, Ont.) booted two penalty kicks and a convert to lead all Excalibur players with eight points.

First-year forward Alex Douglas (Madoc, Ont.) and freshman back Hayden Ryan (Lindsay, Ont.) scored tries in a losing effort.

Despite the loss, Trent received its second OCAA silver medal in three seasons. The Excalibur has earned three medals in four seasons, including a bronze medal in 2011.

Humber ties Seneca's record of five straight OCAA men's rugby gold medals from 2001 to 2005. Humber increased its record of most OCAA men's rugby championships to seven.

In the OCAA bronze medal match, the Algonquin Thunder prevailed 16-12 over the Fleming Knights. Algonquin secured its third OCAA medal in four seasons.

Third-year player Brian Hue (Ottawa) led all Thunder players with six points on two penalty kicks. Fifth-year veteran Phil Assad (Ottawa) and second-year player John Shaw(Ottawa) also scored tries for  Algonquin.

First-year scrum-half Jordan Graham (Peterborough, Ont.) and freshman wing Dylan Needham (Lindsay, Ont.) each scored a try for Fleming in a losing effort. Another first-year player, Casey Hill (Peterborough, Ont.), added a convert.

Fleming has not achieved an OCAA medal since receiving silver in 2008.
