A RECORD SETTING SEASON FOR MEN'S GOLF

ETOBICOKE, Ont -- From 2001 – 2012, the Humber men’s golf program won an unprecedented ten national titles.  Looking back over all the victories, medals, and banners, it’s easy to see how magical the 2010-11 season was.

Former golf coach and now Director of Athletics Ray Chateau calls his 2010-11 Humber Golf Team one of the greatest, if not the greatest, golf squad ever assembled by any college or university. Its record to date would seem to more than justify this claim.

This record breaking season began at the OCAA Golf Championship at Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay.  Comprised of Mark Hoffman, Adrian Cord, David Lang, and Greg Belsito, the Hawks would win their fifth consecutive OCAA title by an impressive 34 strokes.

Looking to defend its national title, Humber flew to British Columbia, not knowing the ever-lasting history they were about to make. At the Dune Golf Club in Kelowna, the Hawks set the tone for the week, as the best-prepared team in the field.

After three consecutive rounds under par, David Lang captured the individual championship and a CCAA individual scoring record at 10-under par (206).  Despite a 40-foot birdie putt on 17, Adrian Cord lost to teammate Mark Hoffman by one stroke, yet Humber still placed all three golfers on the podium for the first time in program history.  Its team total of 848 was a new CCAA record, as Humber won the team title by 38 strokes.  Tournament Director Bill Bilton stated, “the performance of the Hawks was utterly dominant, and on par with any NCAA Division I team he had ever competed against.”

Looking for the triple crown, the Hawks would cap the best season in the team’s history at the 2011 Golf Canada University/College Championships.  Held at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club, Humber would post the low team score in each round of the tournament and win by a convincing 18 shots over the University of British Columbia.  With the addition of Alex Dumais, all five Hawks would finish in the top-14 in a field of 103 of the country’s best collegiate golfers.

Humber captain Mark Hoffman, would dominate the tournament start to finish and was the only golfer under par for the tournament (73, 74, 71, 69).  Cord and Belsito would join Hoffman as Golf Coaches’ Association of Canada All-Canadians.

The Hawks would build on their success from the collegiate season as Mark Hoffman went on to win the 2011 Ontario Amateur and teammate David Lang would become the first Hawk to compete in the U.S. Amateur.  In August, Hoffman, Cord, Belsito, and Coach Chateau represented Canada at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
