FIVE STRAIGHT PROVINCIAL TITLES FOR MEN'S RUGBY

During the span of half a decade, the Humber Hawks men's rugby team was the most dominant program in the province.  The Hawks won five consecutive OCAA titles and amassed a 36-4 (.900) record during that time.

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -
The Humber Hawks tied an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) record on Saturday, winning their fifth consecutive men's rugby title with a 29-18 win over the Trent Excalibur in the gold medal match.

Humber second-year outside centre Johnny Sheridan (Bolton, Ont.) led all players with 14 points, scoring two tries while adding two converts. Second-year players Steve Fievet (Alliston, Ont.) and Scott Gauer (Mississauga, Ont.) scored one try each for Humber.

After winning seven straight games via shutout, it took until the gold medal match for the Hawks to allow their first points to the opposition. Humber was actually behind on the scoreboard for the first time all season, trailing 6-5 at one point. But the Hawks persevered, taking the lead for good shortly after that.

Trent second-year back Jesse Leadbetter (Midland, Ont.) booted two penalty kicks and a convert to lead all Excalibur players with eight points.

First-year forward Alex Douglas (Madoc, Ont.) and freshman back Hayden Ryan (Lindsay, Ont.) scored tries in a losing effort.

Despite the loss, Trent received its second OCAA silver medal in three seasons. The Excalibur has earned three medals in four seasons, including a bronze medal in 2011.

Humber ties Seneca's record of five straight OCAA men's rugby gold medals from 2001 to 2005. Humber increased its record of most OCAA men's rugby championships to seven.
