SARNIA, Ont -- No. 3 Humber men's basketball's (11-0, 1st West) offence clicked on all cylinders Sunday afternoon as they reach the century mark for the fourth time this season, beating the Lambton Lions (6-7, 6th West), 100-82.
The Hawks defence took control of the game from the very beginning. Humber opened the game on a 16-6 run led by their intensive defence. The team's fast-paced style led to many fast break points, and they put up buckets in bunches. The chemistry the Hawks continue to display has made them one of the most enjoyable teams in the OCAA to watch.
The Hawks began the second quarter with the same intensity. Their full-court press continued to force the Lions to commit a number of turnovers. Humber began the frame with a 14-4 run and took an early 20 point lead. Jaylan Morgan's 17 points and Zach Marcelline 12 points in the first half helped the Hawks take a 50-30 lead at halftime.
The Hawks scored 26 points in the third quarter, continuing their aggressive play. Humber's bench put up 50 points, scoring half of the team's total points. Trevon Mollison's energy plays were crucial for his team, getting the group fired up after converting some acrobatic finishes. The Hawks bench was led by Zach Marcelline who finished with a season-high 19 points, helping Humber take a 30 point to lead going into the fourth.
"Just staying confident," said Zach Marcelline after finishing with his season-high. "I have been in the gym a lot lately, just reminding myself to take the shots you have. Let it come to you. My teammates trust me with the shot, and they swing it out so you just gotta knock it down."
Humber appeared to take their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter but maintained their double-digit lead. Their 30-point lead was cut to as low as 16. The Lions outscored the Hawks 36-24 in the fourth quarter, the most points they allowed in a quarter all season long. Despite Lambton's effort, the Hawks maintained their lead and closed out the road trip with a 100-82 win.
"[The team's performance] was good," added Marcelline. "It's always a matter of standard. I think our toughest problem is not becoming complacent. Staying locked in, not playing to the competition level, and trying to play championship-calibre basketball will be the biggest thing for us moving forward."
Humber improves to 71-0 all-time in the regular season when scoring 100-plus points in a game.
