KITCHENER, ON: The Hawks remained undefeated on the season, now with a league-leading 6-0 mark, as they cruised past the Conestoga Condors (0-6) by a score of 85-69 on Wednesday evening at the Conestoga College Athletic Centre.
Khalid Ismail, was huge coming off the bench for the Hawks. He finished with a game-high 15 points, while shooting an efficient 77% from the field.
Ismail was ready when his number was called.
"I'm just trying to stay focused and grind. The coaches keep telling me my time is going to come, so every time I get on the court I try and produce and give everything I have", said Ismail.
When asked about the winning streak to start the year, Ismail responded, "When we play, we look to share the ball. Everyone on this team can play so it's all about moving the ball and being selfless. The coaches gives us a great game plan, so we just follow and execute."
The entire Hawks team contributed on Wednesday evening. Twelve of thirteen players on the roster scored.
The ball movement for the Hawks has been key
The Hawks chemistry and their ability to run the court and move the ball has not only made them one of the most dominating teams but also one of, if not, the most entertaining team to watch in the OCAA.
The Hawks athleticism and team defense have made up for their lack of size in the paint. Their fast-paced game, helped them jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Micqueel Martin led the way playmaking. His assist total did not justify the number of people he created opportunities for.
In the second quarter, Fowzi Mohamoud helped the Hawks get their first double-digit lead of the game after knocking down back to back threes. Team captain DeQuon Cascart brought his usual energy. He helped lead the Hawks to a 19-5 run to start the second quarter. With 4:00 remaining in the second, the Hawks led 38-18. They went into halftime with a 41-23 lead.
Humber opened the second half with their usual style of tenacious defense, managing to continue getting steals and fast break points. However, in the fourth quarter, the Hawks seemed to take their foot off the gas, and the Condors took full advantage. The home side scored 31 points in the frame, and at one point, brought the game back down to a 9 point spread. Khalid Ismail quickly hushed the crowd with an And1, followed by a 3-point shot to put all hope of a comeback to rest.
Humber will look to build on their undefeated start next week, as on Wednesday, November 21st, they will be on the road against the University of Toronto Mississauga Eagles.
